[identity profile] dellahaye.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I've thought of a name for my baby, (for a baby girl at least). Still thinking of a name if its going to be a baby boy :)

If my baby is a baby girl, she will be
Jev Alexandra Kahrise.

what do you think?

When said fast, Jev sounds like Jeff.

Maybe you could use Jev as a middle name instead then?

I think I'm confused.

What is Jev? Is it supposed to be short for something?

also, Jev: It sounds like Jeb. Or Jed. I wouldn't want my daughter's name to remind me of a Texan farmer, would you? (no offense to Texan farmers or men named Jeb ;) )

What is Kahrise? How do you pronounce that? Carys is nice if that's what you meant.

Alexandra is nice.

Putting unnecessary extra letters into a name will just make a child's life harder.

Baby name sites lie. They give wrong definitions for names that don't mean anything.

Check out this link for names that are similar. This site has good information and you can trust the meanings here.

Just out of curiosity but why can you trust that site, and not any others?

I'm sure there are others besides it, but this is the one that I know for sure is reliable, and provides the most information about the names.

It gives you actual references/explanations to where a name comes from - like, the words in the original languages and alphabets, and historical sources for them, not just the name and its supposed meaning. You can actually check his facts yourself instead of taking his word for it.

It's run by a guy who does real historical and etymological research on the origins and meanings of names in many languages. This site doesn't list fake, made-up etymologies, like "Neveah means butterfly in 'Slavic'", or BS like that.

Basically what Ewaeva said. BtN uses actual, reliable sources, while most other naming sites copy from cheap, erroneous baby naming books or (most frequently) from each other. A good rule of thumb is that if it's got the word "baby" somewhere in the URL, it's probably not reliable.

Putting unnecessary extra letters into a name will just make a child's life harder.

Why? I have the easiest name to spell and still find people adding letters to it that aren't supposed to be there. I always have to spell my name for people, and all it is is D-A-R-A. Maybe if my parents had named me Darah I'd have an easier time.

::SHRUG:: Just playing devil's advocate.

I don't understand Jev -- I see from the comments it's after the dad, but eh. It just doesn't feel like a name.

Alexandra is nice.

And I was assuming Kahrise was the last name, but if it's a second middle ... no.

Sorry not to be more positive.

[OOC: Reposted because of a bad typo, d'oh.]

I really don't like it... I'm sorry. I don't understand why the baby can't have it's own unique, individual name and perhaps have a middle name to honour his/her father (that's just my opinion)? Jev is a nickname, you said it yourself... sure it sounds cute on a baby, but beyond that? You like Kahrise - I was going to suggest "Carys" (it's Welsh "to love"). The female variant of Jervis is Gertrude... I don't know your feelings on that. Is there any other way you can name a child after him without using his own name? For example, a middle name, an important family member to him, perhaps a name from a song you both love, or even a name that has a meaning that's important to him or both of you ? There are SO many ways to honour someone with a name without just using their first name.

Wow, I'll shush now - congrats on your baby :)!

Alexandra is so pretty, and it will be wonderful on both a little baby girl AND a grown woman. Jev might be cute when she is little but do you really want to have her grow up to be a strong, intelligent businesswoman named...Jev? I think maybe Alexandra and Jev should switch places.

Eh, to me Jev is a male name...

I think it's a nice, original name. Jev is cute, and even if she ends up not liking it, she'll have two other names as a back up.

I think a lot of people are going to assume throughout Jev's life that either a) Jev is short for something, or b) her name is "Jeff." My initial impressions, anyway.

Don't do it. Alexandra alone is a nice name with lots of nn's to choose from.

I really really like Alexandra Carys. Jev is...weird. I see your comment about the daddy...but it's weird. And it sounds like Jeff.

What about Alexandra Jev Ka(h)rise Meloy? It's much better.

I think maybe you should pick just two. That name is really long and your poor kid is never going to be able to fit it on anything, like a driver's license.

I'd go for Alexandra Jev if Jev HAS to be in it.
about Kahrise; I like Karise /Carys., but Kahrise makes me think its a last name.
I think Alexandra Carys (Jev) is a really nice name.
