Does Elisha pronounced ee-LIE-sha sound more masculine or feminine to you?
It means "my God is salvation" and is a masculine biblical name, but apparently more recently people have used it for girls.

Well it sounds masculine to me because I know it is a masculine. However, it does sound more feminine to me if pronounced El-ee-sha, so I would say El-LIE-sha is definately the more masculin pronunciation.

It sounds masculine to me because it reminds me of Elijah.

Elisha was a male prophet. So, definitely masculine for useage. But, I will admit that before my cousin Elisha was born, I thought it was incredibly feminine sounding because of similar names like Alicia.

E-lie-sha is definatly masculine, but let me warn you, if you name your son Elisha, odds are he'll spend the rest of his life correcting people when they call him a woman. My daddy is Elisha and if it isn't a telemarketers or mailmen calling him a female, it's someone being aweful ignorant about pronouncing his name correctly. Even when you correct them. My father has been "Elijah" and e-LEE-sha for as long as I can remember. ::sigh::

It angers me, too, because I wanna name my first born son after daddy, but I don't want to put him through that. blah. Lol.

Sorry that this is incredably tangenty... Daddys name gets me very worked up. ::rolls eyes::

If it helps, I've watched my little cousin grow up with the name Elisha and he hasn't had problems with it. It might be because he lives in the Bible Belt, though.

I think people screwing up a rather well-known name like that makes them sound stupid. It's a good way to figure out if the person you are talking to on the phone has a brain or not. ;)

Here's the deal.

People who know about history, literature, etymology, etc., and who know and care who Elisha was, will say it is masculine and will roll their eyes at people who name girls Elisha.

People who don't know, and don't care, will say "AWW THAT'S SO KYOOT FOR A LITTLE GIRL!!!!11 It sounds purdy! Who cares if it's some old dude in the bible!"

Unfortunately for all male Elishas, most people don't know and don't care.
