Tristan is to boyish for me BUT I have a cousin named Trista (female) and love that name. Acctually when she was born 22 yrs ago my aunt called me and gave me 3 choices for her name and I picked it so even at the age of 12 I liked that name a lot.
Tristan has always sounded girly to me because it's so close to Kristen. And I've known only one Tristan in my life and she was a girl. Her nickname was Trista. I know it was originally a boys' name.. but it sounds so feminine to me. Kyle is strictly a boys' name to me. I've only ever known male Kyles, my nephew included.
I've always thought Tristan sounded girly, too, cause my name is Kristen and I couldn't imagine a boy having a name so similar to my own. I don't like Tristan for either sex, though.
I'm on the fence, mostly because a) I like both names and b)I've known girls with the names. Not that it should change my mind, but when you get used to something it doesn't sound so 'weird' anymore. But, I do feel kind of weird about the boys names for girls trend. Like I'd be stealing from what I consider to be a limited pool of good boy names.
My husband desperately wanted to name my daughter Tristan but I just couldn't bring myself to do it, bc it really is a boy's name to me no matter how many girls I [will] see with it.
I like Kyle as a girl's name as long as you know she'll get a lot of mispronounciations. My friend Kyle (a girl) gets called Kylie a lot. Tristan reminds me of Tristan and Isolde ... but I think it could work well for both.

Both names sound so similar to their female equivalents Trista and Kylie, but people might as well use the female versions for girls.
