I'd like opinions on the name Julian for a girl.

I've found some places that say this is both a boy's name and a girl's name, but most just say it is a boy's names. I've found other, feminine spellings that are pronouced the same (Juliane, Julianne), but I don't really like those spellings.

I guess I'd mostly like to know if people would see/hear Julian and think "That girl has a boy's name"

Edit: This is not a name I'm considering for a child. I was just wondering because to me Julian sounds feminine and some places say it is both a boy's name and a girl's name. So don't have a heart attack.

if you name a baby ashley or courtney, most people will assume it's a girl, if you name a baby julian, people will assume it's a boy.

that's why it's the same to me- both used to be used for the one gender and now are predominately used for the other

But Julian has always been predominantly masculine, even in the middle ages. Julian of Norwich got her name from her church - St. Julian's - which was named after a male. Where Ashley and Courtney have really gone from male to female, Julian has never gone from female to male - it's always been male.

but...julian was never a girls name. it's always been strictly a boys name, so i don't see how it compares to ashley/courtney.
