I'd like opinions on the name Julian for a girl.

I've found some places that say this is both a boy's name and a girl's name, but most just say it is a boy's names. I've found other, feminine spellings that are pronouced the same (Juliane, Julianne), but I don't really like those spellings.

I guess I'd mostly like to know if people would see/hear Julian and think "That girl has a boy's name"

Edit: This is not a name I'm considering for a child. I was just wondering because to me Julian sounds feminine and some places say it is both a boy's name and a girl's name. So don't have a heart attack.

I would think it's a boy's name.

And while Julian and Julianne sound similar, they don't sound the same. JU-lee-en vs ju-lee-ANN. Mostly that the accent is on different syllables I guess.

Yes. I would think that. Julian is a boys name. You could always use Jillian.

Julian is definitely male. It was used on women in the middle ages, as in Julian of Norwich, but hasn't been in some centuries. I'd definitely think "boy's name," and seeing as it's in the top 100 for boys right now, I bet a lot of others would too.

I've never heard of Julian being used as a girl's name, with this one exception.

you could use julianne or julienne.

although usually when i think about it, i think of julien as the boy's name because i know some boys named that, as opposed to none named julian.

Yeah, it wasn't even her real name, though it's not uncommon to find male names for women in the records, since feminine spellings hadn't been standardized - Julian/Juliana is a great example - or because they were listed under some kind of patronymic.

Julian May (born 1931) - it took me years to discover she was female, and after I'd read a good half dozen of her books. But I think in her field (SF/Fantasy) she benefited from being mistaken for male.

Yeah, I would definitely think it was a girl with a boy's name, but I've heard worse. What about Gillian/Jillian? It's pretty similar (I believe they even come from the same root) and is undeniably feminine.

It wouldn't bother me a bit to see it on a girl because it used to be used for girls (i.e. Julian of Norwich). It's the same to me as naming a boy Ashley or Courtney now.

It's a boys' name to me, and one of my favorites at that. I like Juliana for a girl, though. Jool-lee-ON-uh. Lol.

I think it's a tough call because I see Julian and want to pronounce it Jul-ee-en, the boy's name.

Juliane or Julianne looks like Jul-ee-an, the girl's name.

That being said, I would think more about your little girl being mistaken for a boy before she has a chance to correct them.

My friend Erin's parents preferred that spelling to Aaron, yes, he is a boy, and people (teachers, people online, anything done before they ask for their gender) always think he's a girl before they are introduced. He hates it.

wtfff Julian is a BOYS name. It's my favorite boys name ever and I will die if it becomes a "girls name". Julianne, etc are NOT pronounced the same as Julian.

wtf? how is it the same as naming a boy ashley or courtney? look at lists of the most popular baby names, ashley and courtney will both be on there for girls, julian will not. if you name a baby ashley or courtney, most people will assume it's a girl, if you name a baby julian, people will assume it's a boy.

You know what's weird to me, is that I have never met a girl named Ashley. Ever. I know several boys called Ashley though, so to me it's very much a boy's name. Maybe it's a UK/USA thing.

that's why it's the same to me- both used to be used for the one gender and now are predominately used for the other

But Julian has always been predominantly masculine, even in the middle ages. Julian of Norwich got her name from her church - St. Julian's - which was named after a male. Where Ashley and Courtney have really gone from male to female, Julian has never gone from female to male - it's always been male.

but...julian was never a girls name. it's always been strictly a boys name, so i don't see how it compares to ashley/courtney.

Julian is a boy's name in my opinion.

Double the N and maybe.. Juliann could be fem.

Juliette, Julie-Anne.. Julianne.. all fem..

It must be. Anyone in their teens or early 20s in the US, I'm willing to bet they went to school with at least one girl Ashley. I knew five at my high school. And three of them were Ashley S.
