We were continuing to search through baby girl names and I came across the name Malia.

"How do you like this name" - myself
"Isn't that a disease?" - Kevin
"Malaria?" - myself
"Same thing..." - Kevin
"No, Malia is a name. Malaria is a disease that kills about 1-3 million people annually" - myself

Oh boy. Thank God we are only one third of the way through the pregnancy. I wasn't in love with that name anyway. I just dont think I have ever heard it before.

I agree with your hsuband. That name has been brought up here before, and most of us agree. Sorry! "mal" is just not a good way to start a name IMO

How do you pronounce it?
I knew a little girl named Maleah, pronounced muh-LEE-uh, and I thought it was really pretty. The spelling Malia looks like MAL-ee-uh though.

All I know is in SPanish "mal" means bad...

In latin, even, as it is the first part of many words meaning bad in English as well:

malevolent
malicious
malady

Of course, here I go again with a comment for this name.

It's Hawaiian. Muh-Lee-uh.

Ethnic names that people aren't familiar with always look odd to people.

Not that I personally love the name, I'm just sayin...

I agree with you. I've seen other comments about Malia and I don't understand why lots of people get worked up about it, with other names they say "oh it's an ethnic name."

Malia is okay. I'm not a fan of the "mal" beginning, though. I prefer Mila or Myla.

It's ok...doesn't make me think of the disease or anything, I'm just not a fan of it anyways.

I have known two people with the name, one pronounced Muh-LEE-uh, the other pronounced MALL-ee-uh. I kind of like it but would never use it.

I love the way it sounds. I HATE the way it looks. It looks like a disease, but sounds gorgeous. Sad, really.

I disagree with the disease part. Maybe other people can't handle it.

Maliha is what our zoo just named a new elephant because it means strong and beautiful in Indian.
Malita was my suitemate in college and she was hispanic. It's a spanish variation of Maria which is a variation of Mary which means perfect one. Hardly a bad name associated with malo like people think.

I have a friend named Malia, and no one ever makes fun of her and calls her Malaria or mentions that "mal" means "bad." I didn't even think about it until people here mentioned it. I think it's a pretty name.

I don't have an opinion about Malia. Don't love it , don't hate it. However, my nephew is named Easton. :)

Oh, and they named his baby sister Anna. Which I think is weird, having an unusal name and a well known name together. But to each his own.
