what do you all think of hyphenated first names, would you call the kid by the whole thing or just the first part? and do you think a middle name is necessary?

for example i have a friend named peter-james mackinnon, mackinnon being his middle name, and another friend named anna-louise sarah, sarah being her middle name.

peter-james gets called pj.
anna-louise gets called anna-louise.
and i know two girls named emma-louise, both who go by 'emma'.

Mary-Ann
Anne-Marie

My friend goes to college with a girl named Ellie-Kate, who gets called Ellie-Kate (upon her insistence). I love it. I really like double names, and I don't mind them hyphened, but there's always the risk of your kid getting called by their initials, which I HATE.

Ellie-Kate makes me think of the word "allocate"

My best friend is SarahRose without hyphenation. I think it's great.

I also met a little girl named Ella-Skye the other day. Her mother called her Ella-Skye instead of shortening it. I also thought it was cute.

Sarah Rose is the name I have picked as my favorite for a girl. Neat that your best friend is named that (and w/o hyphenation).

I know two kids who have two first names. There is no hyphen between them but the two names are still both their first name.
They are:
Anna Sophia
Michael Anthony

I don't like hyphenated first names. I have a hyphenated middle name and they're kind of a pain in the ass.
They can sound pretty, i know someone who's firstborn will be Amélie-Rose, they are planning on making sure she goes by that, but much for me.

I really ate the name Louise so any ****-Louise name makes me cringe.

I personally don't like them. I hate the little ( - ) sign. People should just stick to first/middle name bases.

i know a girl named Ruby-Jane, but shes always called Ruby. I really like this combination :)

why is there always only a first+middle name construction in VS and not just as much names as you want? Here in Holland you can give as many names as you want (tho most people only have 3 names)

It always just reminds me of older Catholic women. Mary Margaret, Mary Catherine, Mary Lois, Mary Louise, Katherine Louise.

My middle name is hyphenated and I love it..
I'm not so keen on a hyphenated first name though, only if the two names are shorter, otherwise it's just a mouthful.

My boyfriends sister is Jenna-Lee, but she just goes by Jenna. Her parents couldn't agree on her name so they gave her both.

I hyphenated my daughters middle name, only because the 2nd middle name was important to me, and I wanted it included on legal documents, and all forms including her full middle name. But I've found that when I say her name, I drop the 2nd. Oh well.

I don't like it in the first name slot.. I don't quite understand the appeal. But I'd rather see a Mary-Catherine or an Anna-Sophia than a McKaedylynne anyday, so I can't complain.

I don't really like hyphenated fist names. I think they look kinda weird. Instead of hyphenating our daughter's first name, she just had two first names. Her name was (first)Brenna Rose (middle; after my deceased cat) Sherman (last)mylastname-hislastname. We called her both Brenna and Brenna Rose. Not sure which would have stuck. My mother wanted to call her Rosie.

The giving her my cat's name, Sherman, was a bit of a last-minute decision, and whoa nelly, was I on a lot of morphine! Until we had her, we'd just planned on first(BRenna) middle(rose), but I like having them bbth first so I could call her both without calling her by her full name. We may do this with our future children as well.

I would find it annoying if I had a hyphenated first name, so I wouldn't do that to my child.

I like some hyphenated (or just double) first names. My Mom is Mary Lou and I know a handful of Mary Beths, Mary Alices & Mary Ellens. I'm so so on those. I like Anne-Sophie and I knew a Sarah-Elizabeth (mostly called by both names, hardly ever shortened to just Sarah). I also knew a little girl whose name was Katie Rose (fn, mn but called by both almost always by her parents. They also had a son Gavin Joseph who they called "Gavy Joe" the majority of the time).

ok, so long comment short, I guess I like them except in cases of really random names which sound weird when smashed together.
