May. 17th, 2014 10:34 pmMy husband and I are expecting our first, and it's a boy! We've had a girl name picked out forever (Cora) but boy names are tougher for us. What do you think of Benjamin, Cameron, Gabriel, or Isaac? Last name is two syllables, kind of sounds like the store Menards. What kind of person do you imagine for each of those names?

Date: 2014-05-18 04:51 am (UTC)Benjamin and Isaac are both on our list, and I love Gabriel/Gabe. I think with the "style" of Cora, I like Ben the best.
Some other ideas (via Nymbler) are Oliver, Raphael, Simon, Nathan, and James. Congrats again. :)

Date: 2014-05-18 03:05 pm (UTC)For the middle name, we might do my last name, since it's too long to actually hyphenate with my husband's. We've also discussed using husband's first name (Michael) or a couple other family names. My family usually does family names for middle names.
I really like Nathan, but I have a cousin and spouse that are Nathaniel and Corrine, so it'd be kind of weird if we ended up with a Nathan and Cora :)

Date: 2014-05-18 07:23 am (UTC)My cousin's daughter is Caroline who only goes by the nn Cora, as she gotten older I really love it, suits her perfectly & underused.
Quite a few people I know love Gabriel/Gabe but its NMS. I know two both go by Gabe and they're quite similar, sweet and very chatty/friendly.
Cameron is a bit too close to Cora.
Love Ben, in particular Isaac has grown on me lately. I only have positive associations with both names.

Date: 2014-05-18 09:39 am (UTC)I think Benjamin is really nice, but I like the ending and I'm not that keen on Ben (or more horrifically, 'Benno' as a child is named at my school) and it would get inevitably shortened (even in pre-K, everyone insists on calling one of our students Ben even though his name is Benjamin.) It's on my list, but for this reason it's pretty low down my list!
Cameron- love the name, dislike the meaning (bent nose) and know an awful child called it who everyone shortened to 'Cammie' (he's a boy, FYI.) But also there is a jockey in England whose name is Cameron but he goes by Cam which I think is way cooler.
Gabriel is my favorite of your names. I really like Gabe as a nickname (one of my favorite nicknames for boys.) I'd think about using it if it was more mainstream where I live (hey, it might be in 4-5 years when I'm ready.)
Dislike Isaac. I think when the kid is a teenager, anything with a 'sac' sound is going to come into some seriously mean teasing!

Date: 2014-05-18 06:00 pm (UTC)Benjamin is either a legitimately nice guy or a Nice Guy. If he goes by Benjamin he's a bit uptight.
Cameron is quiet and possibly profound, possibly just boring.
Gabriel is very friendly, talkative and relaxed. Times two if he goes by Gabe.
Isaac is strait laced and a man's man, unless he goes by Zac (of whatever spelling), then he's charming but not the most responsible.
