A new child started in my class and his name is Fraser. Pronounced Frazer like razor according to mom. Why? Or couldn't she have just spelled it Frazer so we wouldn't be so confused?

Since Fraser is a common name and not some special snowflake kreative spelling I don't see the big deal. Now if it was spelled Frayzier that would be confusing LOL

Hmm, Frazer like Razor, not fray-jer? (the j there sounding like the z in azure or the s in pleasure). I've never heard that name pronounced like that before either. I would also have pronounced it fray-jer or fray-sir, not fray-zer. Oh well. Chalk that one up to weird.

I'm a bit confused. I'd pronounce Fraser sort of like "fray-shur." How is it correctly pronounced?

Thats exactly how I would say that XD Fraser is pretty common around here. Frasier [Fray-jure], like the show was a name I'd never heard until said show.

That's how I'd pronounce it.

I am sorry I didn't mean to come off harsh. Maybe I misunderstood the situation.

I grew up in BC near the Fraser River, and the Alex Fraser bridge. It's always been pronounced rhyming with "razor" where I lived.

I live in Vancouver, where the Fraser River is nearby. It's definitely pronounced Frazer. Or /ˈfreɪzər/ if you know IPA.

That is how it is supposed to be pronounced...

I think it may be a regional pronunciation. I personally, (Canadian born; raised in Ontario), have always pronounced it as Fray-zer not what I think you are thinking of with a sort of off j sound. Maybe it just sounds different to/in different accents? I think of the Fraser River and a boy I went to high school with. Were I to say what the word rhymes with I'd automatically think of razor though I've heard it both pronounced both ways. I've always just assumed "accent" rather than "different pronunciation".

To me, Fraser and Frasier are pronounced differently, so I think the mum is right here. Fraser is common here in the UK, Frasier less so.

I would have said Frazer or Frasier. Neither seems like a weird pronunciation to me.

I think Fraser is always pronounced like Frazer, with a buzzing s sound. It doesn't have an i between the s and the e, so it wouldn't be pronounced Frasier.
