babynames | (no subject)

So I'm finally at that stage in life where I've decided I'm going to start having children in the next 2-5 years. Meanwhile, all my friends and people I grew up with are starting their families and having kids, for example one of the children in my neighbourhood who is 5 years younger than me. (Makes me feel kind of old.)

Anyway, I'm one of those who sorted out my future baby names at 14 and actually kept most of them. I've changed my #1 boys name and the middle of my #1 girl, but they've mostly stayed the same. I'm starting to realize that my fear of other people I know using my favorite names is increasing by each pregnant friend I see. Unfortunately my name choices aren't so rare that I can go clear of everyone else, but they're not in the top 40 either.

Would you guys use your favorite name even though one of your friends end up using it? Where does the limit go? BFFs, normal friends, friends you have on facebook and talk to once a year, or those you just hear about every now and then.

(I actually told one of my non-pregnant best friends that one of the girl names she liked was 'my' name. She laughed and told me okay. She has later decided she only wants short names for her kids anyway so it's out of the question for her now.)

I would still use Magdalena and Henry. Henry is the name of my deceased grandfather - there is no changing it, unless I choose to do Henri instead. Magdalena is pretty uncommon here, so it's unlikely my fiends would use it. If they did I would still use it, because I love it.

That should say friends, not fiends. Haha.

We used common names and they're actually names OF our friends. Didn't bother me a bit.

It depends on how close they are. I wouldn't use my best friends' children's name or even normal "outer circle" friends I hang out with maybe once a month or so. But if we're just Facebook friends, then yes, I'd use the name. I certainly wouldn't tell any of my friends that a name she is thinking about is 'my' name. It depends on who uses it first, based upon who has children first.

My cousin and I are the same age and we liked a lot of the same names. She used a name I liked for her oldest daughter (Sophia, which she totally ruined with the middle name Jaden) and a name I like, but wouldn't use, for her son (Gabriel). Another my cousins did take a boys' name I really, really liked (Isaiah - he's 8 now; this cousin is about 10 years older than me) but I have a lot of names I like, so I'll just pick another one. Family within the same generation is pretty off limits, although I would name kids in honor of other people.

I'd still use my names I think, though I only have one female friend who is close enough for me to care what names she used and she's my best friend. So she knows what names I like and I know what ones she likes :p

That being said we have this ex-friend who we were close with through high school and who turned out to be totally batshit. I'm civil with her now if I see her and I get on well with her hubby. She had a little girl about 3 years ago and called her Katie. Katie is my best friend's name. We found it to be totally weird XD

i am the same way, but it was really just boy names. i've had one picked out since jr. high. unfortunately, this baby's father is against using it. ever. lol

I just pick names no one would ever use. problem solved.

actually I did find out my #2 boy name was #1 on my bil and sil's list. so I dropped it even though my second son is older than their first. but I much prefer the name my second son ended up with, so I don't even think about it anymore.

I wouldn't use them. I have a STRONG association of feelings and thoughts with persons/objects/names. I won't even use a name if anyone I have ever known has had that name. When we were looking at names, we picked our name long before my husband's cousin (and we don't live remotely near or talk to) who was pregnant and due before us had decided. Neither of us shared the names and when they gave birth, it was similar to the name we had picked for our son. So we changed it.
