[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am currently hiring for a position at my job, so I have had a huge amount of resumes come through my email. A 27 year old female came in for an interview. After interviewing, we took a copy of her IDs, as well as had her fill out background check information.

On her resume, her name was listed as Ann lastname. Her legal name is: LaShanayah-Ann Marie Lastname. She told me, "I always go by just "Ann" because my first name is such a mouthful. I hate it, and I hate that when I use it, people automatically assume I am some stereotypical ghetto girl! I have two college degrees and live in the suburbs!"

Just goes to show that sometimes people don't actually think about their kids being out in the "real world" with some of these names...

At least she has Ann to fall back on! Some people don't get the opportunity to have a nickname that sounds so "normal."

It's sad that she equates ghetto with uneducated.

Maybe it's not that she does, but that employers do...

Well, not all employers, but a decent amount of them.

A lot of people do, because unfortunately, social forces have made it so that most people originating from modern-day ghettoes are uneducated.

Hahaha!!! I think she was just trying to remind you one more time that she has two college degrees. ;)

My mother told me that she selected my name, and my siblings' names, partially on the basis of not wanting anyone to know just from looking at our resume that we were African American. Research studies have shown that hiring managers discriminate against "black-sounding" names. She vetoed three of my father's choices before he settled on Melissa.
