Aug. 26th, 2006 10:35 pmSo I just struck a bargain with my boyfriend.
He loves loves loves the name Mirah with Miriam (after his mother) as the Hebrew name counterpart.
I said okay if our first born is a girl we can name her Mirah if I get to choose the name of our next daughter. He said it couldn't be something he hated so I went through Hebrew baby name books and there were 4 names he agreed to.
So I get to choose between, Leah (pron. Lay-ah, I know some people don't like that pronunciation, oh well), Naomi (Nay-oh-mee), Kezia (Kehz-ia) and Sadie (Say-dee Hebrew name would be Sarah).
so which one do you like the best?
Leah
Naomi
Kezia
Sadie

Date: 2006-08-27 03:07 pm (UTC)incidentally, we wanted to prn it lay-uh also, but I wasn't crazy about Leia either & was afraid that Leah would always be Lee-uh.

Date: 2006-08-27 02:51 am (UTC)i like leah the best and actually like your prounciation better than lee-ah.
what happens if you only have 1 girl? i've always loved the name abigail so when we found out we were having a girl, my dh said i could have my name cause it meant so much to me. i would've been so dissapointed if we used his girl name (annalise) and only ever had 1 daughter.

Date: 2006-08-27 04:12 am (UTC)But I said that if we have a boy first the deal is off so it may never come to pass anyways because his sister's two children are boys and his brother's child is a boy so chances are we will have all boys (which is okay because we agree on boys names).

Date: 2006-08-27 04:28 am (UTC)The pronunciation depends on what community you are from. My boyfriend has never heard Leah pronounced Lee-ah. He grew up in a very Jewish area and Leah is Lay-uh in Hebrew.
I really don't think it will be that big of a problem, but I know a lot of people disagree.

Date: 2006-08-27 05:15 am (UTC)Oh and randomly, I'm not a fan of Sadie because it reminds me of dogs. I work in a vet office and we see a bunch of dogs named Sadie. Which is now oddly something I think about when I'm considering names for my kids or just names in general. *shrug*
I do like Naomi though, a lot. I went to high school with a Naomi and I always thought it was such a graceful, feminine, yet unique name. Ruth is also one of my favorite biblical books and so I like Naomi in that context as well.

Date: 2006-08-27 05:56 am (UTC)I do like all four actually. I agree Leah as lay-uh makes no sense, in my experience.
Naomi
Sadie
Kezie
Leah
That's the order I like them.

Date: 2006-08-27 10:11 am (UTC)If you go with Leah prepare your kid for a lifetime of correcting the pronounciation. It's not a life or death thing, of course, but she will get frustrated by it. Just ask any Kirsten who's lived with telling people it's Keer-sten rather than kur-sten. ;)

Date: 2006-08-27 03:21 pm (UTC)Is it because of the sound of them?
If so I think I agree. I think that Sadie sounds better than Leah with Mirah because Leah and Mirah end so similarly whereas Sadie is completely different.
