[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A baby name post on Facebook brings out some real gems. I've added the parents comments, if they had any...

Lyric Madden ("I love how his name flows!"
Jadeyn Nicole, Jessie AnnaLea, Jonathan Ryker ("We call him Ryker. So unique")
Ammillion Sad'e, Reign Blaze, Cherish Love ("Their Unique & Trendy!")
Nevaeh ("It's Heavan backwards!")
Spencer (girl), Caroline, Cotton (boy) ("Cotton was named as soon as his momma knew he was a boy")
Kaleo Jude, Daius Ryan
Elijah, Anthony, Esteban, Carlos, Kyle, Angel (all boys)
Nissi Jireh, Abigail Fait
Phoenix Edward ("I love how strong it is")
Makenzi, Emeree, Jase ("I love my daughter's names!")
Kara, Draven ("I have never heard my son's name before!")
Saylor Grace ("Not too common... yet!")
Lyssa ("Pronounced like Lisa"), Jessyca, Ryley
Danyel Zane, Levi Lake, Camie Ruthanne ("All my kids go by their middle names")
Payton, Zendaya... "and got one on the way to be named Halo"
Keelynn Noelle ("I've gotten so many positive comments on it.")
Taylor ("I love that my daughter's name isn't on the list, I prefer for it to be uncommon")
Emaleigh (Mom is named Kymberleigh, "It's EMILY, but spelled Emaleigh, so unique!")
Stormi RoseMarie, Royal AngelMiguel ("Good, strong names!")
Carly, Marly (my comment: how confusing)
A'Mere ("My son name AMIR but I spelled it A'MERE")
Cypress De'Leon, Lestat Gianni ("I love unique, different names")
Rylinn Marin, Collin Thomas
Ramses ("I never find my son's name on these popular lists")
Alexander Benton, Jaxen Reign ("We call them Lex and Jax")
Prinahjae, Italy, Arihanna, Verjhonia ("It's pronounced VR-JHONE-NEYAH")
Layla Alexai ("A little twist on Alexia by adding an I :) It's pronounced like Alexa though")
Karrah, Kwynten, Kylena
Gage, Roy, Alesa Faith ("I tried to keep em from having the same namez as a lot of kids but the name Gage seemed to get popular very fast")
Best comments: "I hope the "yooneek" trend dies down soon" and "What happened to naming your kid something they don't have to spell out or prounounce for everyone?" and "Wow, some really odd ones out there!" Lol

I thought of Eric Draven, Brandon Lee's character in The Crow.

Ditto, followed by wondering about how many people named kids after the film, without knowing his name was Eric ;)

I actually like Ruthanne. The rest of the "unique" names... lol Edit: Actually, Ramses is pretty badass, too.

Unique does not mean you have to fuck up the spelling. Your kid is still named Jessica like all of the others born in the 90s!!

Isn't it a prison?! Not a good first name for a person, imo!

From: [identity profile] nobodynomore.livejournal.com
omg I didn't even think about the prison! I assumed it was from Star Trek! Two sets of FIVE parents knew it was Star Trek related...

From: [identity profile] nobodynomore.livejournal.com
It is really bizarre. Only 2 sets of the parents even were aware it was from Star Trek...

Um. My husband had a coworker who named her son Rykers and straight up told people he was named *after* the prison! She heard it on TV and liked it. My husband must have had a WTF face when she told him because she got kind of defensive and said "Well, obviously places like that need strong names. It's such a strong name."

Also, OP, this was the best baby announcement list I've read in ages! The comments are amazing, and I'm especially loving "It's pronounced VR-JHONE-NEYAH" (Geez, why can't people spell this crazy hot mess of letters I've jammed together?!")

Yeah I didn't even think of the prison until another poster pointed it out. I guess my nerd flag is flying haha.

The only ones that I thought were kinda cute were the Lex and Jax nicknames...BUT Jaxen is an awful name so it kind of cancels it out :(

Omg some of these comments are PRICELESS!!

i'm shocked she used "are" and not "is" there, or rather "iz" i guess.haha

The comments!!! Omg they were soooo unique! Lol idiot parents. Don't people realize that these children have to grow up and introduce themselves with these names? How seriously would you take a lawyer named Cotton, a doctor named Blaze or a teacher who misspells her name Emaleigh?

I knew a Blaise in college, now in his 30s. I guess it's a regular name from somewhere.

I like the classic, normally spelled ones - Elijah, Anthony, Abigail, Edward, Alexander, Noelle. Ruthanne is pretty. RoseMarie would look better to me with a lower-case M and I like Arihanna better without the H, but that's just my preference. I guess I'm boring. :)

I'm all for using less popular/less common names or ones with an ethnic background or spelling variant that represents the family heritage. But all the "unique" spellings of common names just look "illiterate" to me. Let your child stand out by making a positive impact on her world, not by spelling her name with 3 Ys, an apostrophe, and 4 silent letters.

Yuck, yuck, and more yuck. The only ones I don't hate are Taylor and Alexander.

Neveah needs to just go away. Ugh, something about that name just makes me cringe.

Kwynten? Eeek!

...the more lists like this I see, the more I want to name my kids something like Jane or Joseph. Because at this rate, THOSE are going to be the rare names. :P

Husband reading over the shoulder (again) spotted this one:

A'Mere ("My son name AMIR but I spelled it A'MERE")

And proceeded to ask if his middle name was Mortal - "coz then it'd be awesome!"...

Fave bad names:

-Ammillion Sad'e
-Kaleo (reminds me of the Paleo diet)
-Alexai (and no, it is not pronounced Alexa, since you chose to spell it with an i. It is now pronounced Alex-AY)
-Kwynten- what in the what? Sounds like a toddler saying 'Clinton'

I actually kind of like Cypress but it makes me think of a swamp.

Also, Stormi is not a strong name, it sounds kind of like a stripper....

"Also, Stormi is not a strong name, it sounds kind of like a stripper"

That's exactly what my husband said

I like Cypress as well, it was considered for my third son but with a last name starting with an S, I decided against it.

The rest of this list is just awful! I wanted to stop reading but couldn't, lol!

I actually like the combination of Phoenix Edward. There might be a problem with initials depending on the last name, but if it begins with, say, a J or a B, it wouldn't be an issue. Alexander Benton is nice, too.

But yes, most of these comments are pretty much delusional. I love the one about adding an "i" to the end of Alexa and then just pronouncing it like Alexa. Couldn't they have saved Alexei for a son?

KWYNTEN? Really? Really? I think that may be in the top 10 worst names I have ever seen...and I've seen a lot at this point. Ugh, terrible.

Verjhonia ("It's pronounced VR-JHONE-NEYAH")

I really think this one was supposed to be "Virginia." Just completely bastardized...

Carly and Marly is just sad because Marly doesn't sound like a real name next to Carly (even though I've MET a Marly). Carla and Marla would sound better (I still don't LIKE it, it's just BETTER).

This is like that episode of SNL where Betty White claims her name is "Blarrrfengarr Blarrrfengarr" but it's spelled "Lee Smith."
