What about Ariel--other than the Little Mermaid association, thanks!---and how would you change it up, if at all, so that it didn't constantly remind you of The Little Mermaid?

I like it, Disney and all!

I might spell it Aireal.

[identity profile] bloomingtulip.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Aireal doesn't sound the same in my head as Ariel. I see how it could, I think, but it doesn't flow right or something.

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was just kinda off the top of my head. There is still something off about it, yeah, lol.

I think it's an absolutely beautiful name, but I don't think there's any escaping The Little Mermaid thing. Although I don't think it's a bad association for a name to have.

The only way to change it I can think of is to spell it Arielle (like Danielle), but that doesn't change the pronunciation which is what will remind people the most. *shrug*

I like Ariel, but prefer Arielle for a girl. I like the pronunciation better and it gets rid of at least some of the Little Mermaid deal. I have a little cousin named Arielle Mia, and she's a little angel, so of course I might be biased :-) But that's the Hebrew pronunciation too. So I prefer it.

[identity profile] dancing-crazy.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and if it's any comfort, I have a friend named Ariel--not Arielle--and she doesn't get too much Little Mermaid stuff. I mean, it's mentioned, but it's not a huge deal. And she's a redhead. So if she escaped it, I think everyone is safe.

my 15-year-old sister is named arielle (pronounced ah-ree-elle). my mum asked me and my other sister when arielle was born if we preferred the name arielle or michelle, and we picked arielle because we'd just seen the little mermaid :D

hmm

Arielle, Aria?(sorta different..) Ariella,

Not only the little mermaid- there's this great sorta obscure series called 'the darkangel trilogy' about this heroine who is named arielle I believe. I loved the books! If you can find them and read them, she is real heroic and cool in the book if memory serves me... after reading it i fell in love with the name for alittle while at least i remember that. anyway maybe you will like the name even more/ if you find those books but good luck either way!

I like Arielle a lot and it doesn't remind me of mermaids, but then Disney movies don't play much of any role in my life. I do prefer Arielle to Ariel though, which seems too masculine.

I knew a girl in college named Ariella and thought that was beautiful.

I love love love Ariel. I prefer it with two 'l's myself - Ariell

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
i dont like it any way you slice it. its great on a little girl, but not on anyone above the age of five.

[identity profile] cathkitten.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I dont like it either, but I like Aurelia, which is close.

[identity profile] x-lostinyou.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's cute, but it doesn't age that well.

I don't really think of The Little Mermaid though... I have a one year old next door neighbour named Ariel, and she's as cute as cute can be, so I automatically think of her.

Actually, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw Ariel was Ariel Sharon. You know that guy from Israel? The prime minister I think was his title. The leader anyway.
I know I'm gonna sound like a total blonde (I am blonde btw) but did he die?

But before I learned about that guy, I always thought of the Little Mermaid and I liked the name. I preferred her sister's name though; Alana and then was Arista and then came Ariel. I can't remember the rest of the names the other sisters had, but I liked all of them. :)

Ariel Sharon is in a coma and is not expected to recover.
Ehud Olmert is Prime Minister of Israel now.

[identity profile] luliriisi.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ah okay, thanks. :)

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I like it quite a lot as a boy's name

[identity profile] oh-snitch.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've always loved that name. For a boy and girl.

[identity profile] seren.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
there's a very popular brand of washing detergent named Ariel in the UK, so I'm afraid it always reminds me of that :/ but once I get past the associations I do like the name.

[identity profile] dreemerr.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 10:41 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] opalfirefly.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
my cousin has a daughter named Ariella

[identity profile] hitzpink.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Ariel. I think I like it better spelled Arielle, though. And I don't think the Little Mermaid association is a big deal. I'm not sure how well it ages, but I love it anyway. :)

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-08-24 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Ariel, but I spell it Arielle.

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
My sisters friend (she's 16) is named "Ariel"...
I honestly see past the whole "Little Mermaid" thing... but even if you can't, is it really that bad of an association? It's a beautiful name.

[identity profile] glitterberrys.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a very pretty name! I also like Arielle, but I always kind of want to say that "ari-ELLE."

[identity profile] poespretty.livejournal.com 2006-08-25 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
that was my husband's top choice for the baby (if it's a girl). we would probably have spelled it Arielle (possible nn Elle/Ellie). It does make me think of the LM (a movie I happend to love) but then, there have been other Ariel/Arielle's out there & they've all survived the association. I actually started liking the name (as in, potentially for my child)when I saw it in a book... not as a character but as a historical reference.
