I posted a bit ago about my friend wanting to name her baby Laila Breeze if it was a girl.

They found out this week it is indeed a little girl, but they're now "98% sure" they want to name her Laila Karisse instead. Laila would be pronounced LY-luh. Karisse is a variation of Charis, meaning "grace" and would be pronounced like "keh-REESE-eh". Her husband is Brazilian and she told me these are the pronunciations that would be used in Portuguese.

I think it's a beautiful name.

Yeah it will :( but they wanted that particular spelling because of the meaning they found associated with that spelling and because of the Portuguese pronunciation.

I didn't get either pronunciations from that name--I pronounced it like "Lay-luh Kuh-rees." If said right, it flows nicely, though.

I do adore Lila, spelled like that. I suppose it's a give and take due to the Portuguese. My friend is Brazilian and she named her daughter Raquel pronounced "Ha-kell" (lol I slaughtered that, but you know, the R is a "Ha" type sound), and she gets called "Ra-kell" all the time here.

Yeah, luckily the "English" pronunciation is just as pretty as the Portuguese so it works out alright :)

Raquel must be a common Brazilian name because I know at least three Brazilian "ha-kell"s also haha. I also know a Rafaella that goes by "haffa".

Indeed, that would be the pronunciation in Portuguese, although I have to say I have never seen any form of Karisse in this country, ever.

Also, Breeze is a pretty amusing name. In Portuguese it would be Brisa, which is the name of a friend of a friend. In fact, she became somewhat internet famous a few years ago for her incredibly long name:

Brisa Dalila Maria Leopoldina Terra Marialda Segunda Mendonça Barrêto Marques de Leão e Sousa

Everything after the 'Segunda' is a surname.

Yeah she said that Karisse is a Greek name, but they liked the meaning and it sounds nice with the Portuguese accent and with Laila. They weren't so much concerned about the name being Portuguese as they were about it having a nice pronunciation.

ai is phonetically the long A sound. My name is Kailee and I have always wanted to strangle every person who called me Kylee.

Laila will and should be pronounced as Layla. If they want Lila, than they need to change the spelling.

I guess it depends on what language you speak or the region you're from. Laila works for them because he's Brazilian and they have a large Brazilian community here in south Florida so it's not like someone in the Midwest trying to be kre8tive or anything: the name will actually make sense to a large portion of their everyday community. I can see why you'd be frustrated being called "ky-lee" but some languages and accents actually pronounce it that way and its normal for them.

Not in Portugese. I'm sure the couple is aware that people who speak English as a first language will pronounce it with the long A.

It is beautiful. I love how it sounds... I admit I would prefer a different spelling, but I respect the fact that the parents want to stick with the Portugese pronunciations for those spellings. :)
