Some new babies joined Wren's Gymboree class this week, all boys, all around 9mths:

Brody
Weston
Thor

Also, DH and I are fairly set on Sylvie if we have another girl in the future. Bearing in mind that we live in the UK, where Sylvia is a quite common middle aged lady's name and Sylvie is virtually unheard of, how often do you think she'll get called Sylvia instead? I love the name Sylvie, but definitely don't like Sylvia. WDYT? Is it too risky?

I can see it getting mixed up a little, but I would know how to pronounce Sylvie. One of my friends who is having twins wanted to use Sylvie and Iris if the twins were girls. I think Sylvie is sweet!

Brody is meh. Weston is nice, but I prefer Wesley. Thor is not my style and a little "out there."

I think a lot of people will assume that Sylvie is a nickname for Sylvia, not realizing that it can also be a name in its own right (a la Sophia/Sophie). But since you live in the UK, where many more people give nicknames as full names (Charlie, Alfie), it might be less of a concern.

Just be nice and realize that most people are doing it out of ignorance/mishearing. My daughter is Philippa nn Pippa, and sometimes people mispronounce it based on seeing it written as "fil-EE-pa", that is, the Spanish/Italian/etc version. I just smile and say "It's PHIL-ip-pa".

I... I never knew how to pronounce Philippa until now. And I quite like it now. The nickname is quite cute too.

I just watched The Avengers again last night, so the idea of a real kid named Thor makes me giggle. :P

Sylvie is pretty!

LOL @ Thor! All I picture is Marvel's Thor. Brody and Weston aren't bad though. They've grown on me a bit.

Thor, oh dear. I can see that kid getting a lot of Avengers references.

It will definitely get mixed up, but Sylvie is such a cute name that you shouldn't let that deter you.

Brody and Weston aren't my style at all, but I've definitely seen worse. Thor, well, they could have called him Loki.

I think that it might take a little while, but I don't see a lot of problems with people calling your daughter Sylvia once you explain that it's Sylvie. (I really prefer Sylvie.)

Sylvie is cute and I actually have a family friend who has a 3 year old girl with that name...but, it most likely will be mistaken for Sylvia frequently...my daughter is Laila (Lay-luh) and people always call her "Lila" similar yes- it happens very often...I don't hate Lila- I think it's pretty but would prefer them to get her name straight- if it were a name I hated or even disliked- it would probably aggravate me to no end

Sylvie is cute, but I feel like it's too nick-namey. But still cute!

Thor?? I hate that. I mean that kid has to tell people for the rest of his life that that's his name. Unless he becomes a rockstar or an artist, I think it's pretty bad.

I prefer it spelled Silvie but perhaps that is because that is how the woman I know with the name spells it.
