[identity profile] dustthouart.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Little girl, about 3, wearing pink tutu, named Spring. Librarian asked her mom to repeat it so that's definitely the name. They were Asian so it's quite possible that this is a literal translation of her name in another language, since 春 is not n uncommon component in Chinese names, I assume it might be the same for other Asian languages.... Or maybe they are just hippies. LOL. I wouldn't choose this name but it could grow on me. It's cheerful.

Got talking with a grandma at the playground watching her 7-ish yo granddaughter, Faryn. I thought I did a good job keeping my face pleasant when she said the name, but she sighed, rolled her eyes, and said "Yeah, I know. I didn't pick it. I named her mother Anne!" LOL. She spelled it for me, hence how I know it's with a y.

Lastly today, a mom was calling her daughter Cassie. No big deal, right? Well, the daughter did something wrong, and like many parents, she pulled out the full form of the name to scold her. But it wasn't Cassandra. It was Cassius. I did NOT do a good job keeping my face straight there but luckily the mom was focused on her child.

Most of the names I hear are actually pretty nice, but that just makes these seem worse by comparison!

Spring is not to my liking at all but I can deal with it. I hope it is a literal translation because otherwise any of the other seasons would have been preferable, but still, at least it's a word and it's straightforward to say and spell.

Faryn... Oh, Anne, why? Why, why, why? Haha, I love the grandmother's reaction though, poor love!

Cassius is by far the worst of the three for me! WHY would you do that to your daughter? I love the name Cassia, it's much more suited to a girl that Cassius!

I went to middle school with a girl named Spring. It's probably my third favourite of the (English) seasons.

Nothing wrong with Faryn.

Cassius is most definitely masculine.

My health teacher in high school was named Spring...she was in her 40s. I dont think it's that bad, actually.

Faryn isn't all that bad, either to be honest.

But Cassius? On a girl? Blech.

I was trying to get a job awhile back at a hospital for a newborn photographer, but I realized, i don't think i could prevent my face from contorting if I heard a name I didn't like. I'm very opinionated about names and I have a terrible time lying.

I assume Cassius is pron. Cass-ee-us and not Cash-us.

lol at the grama sigh. wayy back before it blew up the charts, one of the first madison's I heard of was the granddaughter of someone my mom ran into that she hadn't seen in a while. she was calling the girl Maddie and my mom was like, oh, madeleine? and she said "no, madison. don't ask."

as for cassie.. could be that the mom has weird forms that she pulls out when the real name doesn't work. my daughter Germaine, for example, I call Germany, Geranium, or Germanium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanium) if she doesn't respond to her own name at first.

I was going to suggest (hope) that Cassius was a long nickname as well.

Did she pronounce is Cass-ee-us? I know a 21 month old boy named Cassius (Cash-us) with the nickname Cash. It's much better suited for a boy.
