[identity profile] audiobiblio.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband's boss and his wife welcomed a son a few weeks ago. They named him Townsend Douglas. He joined sisters Sophia (though she goes by Sophie) and Ada. I can't decide what I think of the name, but I don't think it really goes with his sisters' names. What say you, [livejournal.com profile] baby_names?

I'm not a fan of Townsend...That's a mouth full, especially for a baby. Do they call him by a nickname? Love Ada, and Sophia/Sophie is cute, but it seems too popular for my taste.

That's a big name for a baby! What do you shorten that to, Townie?

I don't like it as a first name. As a middle name it would be good, and I don't think it goes with his sisters' names.

Is he named after Douglas Townsend? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Townsend)

I'd never heard of Douglas Townsend. I was thinking Pete Townsend of The Who. OP, I'm curious too if you find he was named for someone/something.

That name should be flipped around. Douglas Townsend would have been nice, but Sophia, Ada, and Townsend sounds odd, like you said.

Is Townsend even a name? Doesn't sound like one AT ALL. Terrible, absolutely terrible. Even stupid names like Tigerlilly or Buttercup have more appeal than Townsend. Did they mistake him for a map?

Huh. Weird, because I like Ada, and Sophie is ok. I think that noun/place names are having an even bigger comeback. We just saw an announcement for a little boy named Stillman Graham in the paper. Stillman and Townsend sound like the same kind of name to me.

I wonder what they will use as a nn?

Those two, plus their older brother, Whittaker (a boy's name I heard on vacation) can all get on their yacht and sail around the sea.

I don't care for Townsend, but I like Sophie and I am coming to love Ada

Ugh. Townsend is a surname, not a first name. Plus, it sounds so pretentious as a first name. I do love Sophia, and Ada is ok.

I dig it. I would call him "Townes" after Townes Van Zandt.
