How would you pronounce Madelen in comparison to Madeleine?

As some of you might have noticed, I'm Norwegian and Madelen is a Norwegian spelling of Madeleine. If I have a girl, that's what I want her middle name to be, and although I suppose middle names aren't that important, I'm planning on moving back to Australia and want all the names to be pronouncable in both languages. If I have to change it to Madeleine it doesn't really bother me that much, but thought I would check anyway.

I think Madelen would actually cause less pronunciation than Madeleine. Some people pronounce Madeleine with the "line" sound rather than the "len" sound, so Madelen actually looks more phonetically correct (in English).

On a side note, Madeleine is one of my favorite names-- Madelen is a beautiful choice. :)

This exactly - my French language ability helps, but I can see others mispronouncing it. OP, I like the spelling :)

I pronounce Madeleine with the end sound line. Medelen more of a lynn sound.

I have a friend that spells it Madelyn.

I like this spelling too but my first thought was "Mad-Ellen" rather than "Mad-A-lynn"because of how Helen is pronounced.

I would use more of a -len as in lend at the end--not a lynn or line.

It's pretty!

Madelen would be mad-uh-len w/ len like end.

Madeleine would be mad-uh-lynn.

I'm Australian and have heard it ending in -lynn, -line, -lane

I think using the Madelen spelling would be the best way of having it pronounced correctly here : )

I'd pronounce "Madelen" as "mad-uh-lynn" and Madeleine as "mad-uh-line", on first look and then reconsider pronouncing Madeleine as "mad-uh-lynn". I think it has to do with the fact I grew up watching these movies about a little French girl named Madeleine which included a song with her name in it, so I think it's kind of a toss up if I pronounce it more French or more English, as I haven't had much exposure outside of those movies to the name. (Just wanted to throw out there, I don't know for a fact if the movie actually had a more French pronunciation or if it was overly anglicized, but I'd assume one of the pronounciations would be French. . .otherwise, read my comment as being "French" v. English [as for whatever reason I feel like the "lynn" ending is more expected where I live.])
