[identity profile] secret-x-stars.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I saw an old friend of mine the other day and she's 8 months pregnant. She's 19 and having a girl blah blah blah.

Anyway, of course the first question is 'what are you naming her?'

'Valkyrie.'

pronounced val-KYE-ree.

...it's an interesting name in theory but really, it kind of makes me wanna facepalm. :(

Oh well. What do you all think?

Yeah, it's kinda too much or something! My guess is if she actually names her that, the girl will end up going by Val.

I kind of like it. It's a real name so that counts for a lot for me. Not crazy about the meaning though, it's kinda creepy.

I LOVE Nordic names. Valkyrie has so much more meaning and history than any other popular name today. Give me a Valkyrie over a Jaiidyn or a Mackenzie-Madison any day.

I wonder if there is an actual Madison-MacKenzie out there anywhere....

Pity that isn't one of the actual pronunciations (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/v/v0013100.html) for the dictionary word.

I hate it. It's somewhat redeemed by the fact that it is a "real" name, but it looks like a youneek name too much.

The word "valkyrie" comes from the Old Norse valkyrja (plural "valkyrur"), from the words "val" (slaughter) and "kyrja" (to choose). Literally the term means choosers of the slain. It is cognate to the Old English "wælcyrige". The German form "Walküre" was coined by Richard Wagner from Old Norse.[1]

the whole link, explaining about the Valkyries.

does she know about all this stuff or did she just pick it "because it sounded different" or something?

I wouldn't mind it so much if she were pronouncing it properly. I find it really difficult to say, the way she is stressing the middle syllable.
