How do you pronounce the name Evelyn? I never even considered that there was more than one pronunciation, but then yesterday I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (it was really good) and Judi Dench's character was named Evelyn, pronounced like "Eve-lyn," two syllables.

I've only ever heard it pronounced with three syllables, closer to "Ev-uh-lyn."

I don't actually care for the name, I'm just now wondering what pronunciation is more common and popular.

And that is why I didn't name my second daughter Evelyn. I pronounce it like in the movie and most people around here (Canada/French Canada) do as well. But my American friends pronounced it like you and I didn't really care for that pronunciation. So I think it depends where you live...

Lol! I don't know why I assume everyone on here is American.:) In French it's definitely Eve-Lyn, in fact I've seen it as "éve-lyn" so "Ayve-lyn." Yeah it's definitely one of those names that varies from region to region I would think.

I have heard it said Eve-Lyn but I generally would go for Ev-eh-lyn [eh is probably more my accent XD] Evelyn is one of my favourite names actually :)

my grandmother's middle name was evelyn, pronounced as "eve-lynn" (two syllables, long E). i think she was named after a man named evelyn, who also used the two syllable pronunciation.

i prefer the "eve-lynn" pronunciation, but i usually say the name as "ev-uh-lin" (three syllables, short E) since it's a lot more common around here.

I love the name! I would pronounce it EV-uh-lyn like you.

I prefer the three-syllable pronuncation, but I think the "Eve-lyn" version is more of a British pronunciation, which makes sense there. The only time I've heard that version was in reference to the author Evelyn Waugh (who was male O.o).

I had only heard of the "Ev-uh-lyn" pronounciation up until a few weeks ago when I was watching Downton Abbey and they pronounced a male character "Eve-lyn." I'm assuming it was a male name? Or at least unisex for awhile?

So, I would definitely pronounce it "Ev-uh-lyn" being from the midwest, of the US.

I have never, ever heard it pronounced with just 2 syllables. I've always heard it (and have pronounced it myself) as Ev-uh-lyn.

In the UK the 2 syllable pronunciation (EVE-lynn) is more common.

I've only ever heard it as Eve-Lyn. I'm in the UK, England to be precise.

I've generally heard EH-vuh-lin, but author Evelyn Waugh is pronounced EVE-eh-lin.

i'm in the UK, and have always been under the impression that Eve-lynn is the male pronunciation, Ev-uh-lyn is the female. incidentally, my american step-niece is named Evelyn (ev-uh-lyn), and her mom goes apoplectic if anyone calls her 'Eve-ie'

I've heard Eve-lyn used only when used on a male (which I've only come across in British context).

I had no idea it was name that could be used on males. You learn something new every day.

Ev-er-lin. I'm in Australia, if that makes a difference to you.

Ev-uh-lyn, and that's also my preference. Eve-lyn sounds...rougher to me, haha.

I've only ever heard it pronounced with the three syllables.
