There's a pattern in my mother's family that I thought might interest you,
baby_names folks: family members marrying/dating someone who has the same first name as another member of the family.
ex.
My great-grandfather's name was Ervin. My great-aunt, his daughter, grew up to marry a man also named Ervin.
My grandparents had four children:
Randall (Randy) Boyd
Annette Marie
Kimberly (Kim) Ann
Paula Claudette
The youngest of my aunts and uncles, Paula Claudette, grew up and married a man named Randall (Randy) Blair. Her husband has the same first name as her older brother--this makes gatherings endlessly confusing, because we're a pretty close bunch.
Annette Marie is my mother, and her SO's name is Eric. After my biological grandfather passed away, my grandmother married a man--also conveniently named, you guessed it, Eric.
Kimberly Ann has a teenaged son, Justin William, whose longterm girlfriend is Kimberley Anne.
Randall Boyd's daughter is Ashley May, and she just called to ask if she could bring her boyfriend, Justin, to my family's Christmas dinner.
Does this happen in anyone else's family?

Date: 2011-12-19 10:32 pm (UTC)however, everyone in my family has a super-common first name - except for me, we've all been in the top 50 for the past fifty years or so. (my name is still pretty average though - christine.) i can see where people might think it's weird, but it doesn't bother me. we all know who we're talking about/to, haha.

Date: 2011-12-20 12:02 am (UTC)My mum's name is Wendy and she has a twin called Mandy.
My older sister is called Mandie and my cousin is called Wendy.
Also, my grandad is called Richard and that name was passed down to his son and then to his son! So we call them Chud, Richie and Ricky!
All of these are on my mums side of the family. We're a close family too and gatherings can get confusing lol!

Date: 2011-12-20 12:13 am (UTC)There would be times, however, that I would be telling a story about one of them, receive a strange look, and realize that I needed to specify which one I was talking about because otherwise the story was creepy/weird/whatever.

Date: 2011-12-20 01:23 am (UTC)My dad is Brian and my husband is Ryan (which ALWAYS gets confused, even though they are different names).
My MIL's maiden name, and my husbands middle name is Andrews/Andrew - and I've got a brother Andrew. Also, if my brother was a girl (and they thought he was until delivery) he was going to be Emily. Can you guess my husbands sisters name? Emily.
Finally, I've got an Aunt Lisa and he has a step sister Lisa.
I also know a family where a brother with a sister named Kerry married a girl named Carrie, but that wasn't my family.

Date: 2011-12-20 04:32 am (UTC)I've had a bit of this problem personally. My first girlfriend's middle name was Laura and my second girlfriend's first name was Laura.

Date: 2011-12-20 05:08 am (UTC)My mom has a sister named Sandra, and my cousin Chad's second wife is Sandra.
My mom is Jean, and my dad has a cousin named Jean.
My brother is Aaron, and my uncle Jerry's younger daughter is Erin.
And then there's William...
My mom has a brother named William (Bill). Her sister Paula's first husband was named William. She named her second son after him (we called him Billy Jon growing up, but now he goes by Bill). My sister is dating a man named William (Bill) who is also the father of her son Brock William.
We won't go into the handful and a half of friends I have also named William, only one of which goes by Will instead of Bill...
And this is actually a discussion my mom's side of the family had a little over three years ago at Lynn's funeral. And my brother, sister, and I were asked to avoid repeating the pattern if at all possible... (at which point we all laughed)

~10 years later, my grandmother married a man named Ken.
My aunt is about to marry a Ken in January.
Also, my parents both have sisters named Betsy (not a nickname for Elizabeth or anything like that, just straight up Betsy).

Date: 2011-12-20 07:10 pm (UTC)That's the only repeating first name, but there is some coincidental middle name matching. My mom's middle name is Jean, my paternal grandmother's middle name is Jean, and my adopted cousin came with the middle name Jean.

Date: 2011-12-26 07:07 pm (UTC)Also, not quite like this, by close enough I think: my cousins Christopher and Ross (brothers) have both dated girls named Angela (Chris is now married to his Angela). Ross has a son, Theo, with his ex Angela, and our cousin Seth also has a Theo.
