There's a pattern in my mother's family that I thought might interest you, [livejournal.com profile] baby_names folks: family members marrying/dating someone who has the same first name as another member of the family.

ex.

My great-grandfather's name was Ervin. My great-aunt, his daughter, grew up to marry a man also named Ervin.

My grandparents had four children:
Randall (Randy) Boyd
Annette Marie
Kimberly (Kim) Ann
Paula Claudette

The youngest of my aunts and uncles, Paula Claudette, grew up and married a man named Randall (Randy) Blair. Her husband has the same first name as her older brother--this makes gatherings endlessly confusing, because we're a pretty close bunch.

Annette Marie is my mother, and her SO's name is Eric. After my biological grandfather passed away, my grandmother married a man--also conveniently named, you guessed it, Eric.

Kimberly Ann has a teenaged son, Justin William, whose longterm girlfriend is Kimberley Anne.

Randall Boyd's daughter is Ashley May, and she just called to ask if she could bring her boyfriend, Justin, to my family's Christmas dinner.

Does this happen in anyone else's family?

it's happened in my family - i dated a guy who had the same name as my father (he went by a different nickname though, so it was less weird); that guy has a sister and an ex with names similar to mine. my current guy has a sister whose name is a variant of mine as well. my brother has also seen girls with names similar to my mom's and mine.

however, everyone in my family has a super-common first name - except for me, we've all been in the top 50 for the past fifty years or so. (my name is still pretty average though - christine.) i can see where people might think it's weird, but it doesn't bother me. we all know who we're talking about/to, haha.

My husband is Kyle, whose has a first cousin named Kyle. My brother was dating a girl named Kylie for awhile.

My husband's mom is named Karen; I have an aunt Karen. My dad is named Kenny; my husband has an uncle Kenny.

My mother in law is Joann and her husbands sister is also Joann. A cousin is named Michael David and my husband is David Michael (inverted but still the same names used).

Not to that extent, but my mother's name is Laurie, and my dad's sister is Lori...Lori never married, so now she and my mom have the same last name too. XD

Not so much marrying them but...

My mum's name is Wendy and she has a twin called Mandy.

My older sister is called Mandie and my cousin is called Wendy.

Also, my grandad is called Richard and that name was passed down to his son and then to his son! So we call them Chud, Richie and Ricky!

All of these are on my mums side of the family. We're a close family too and gatherings can get confusing lol!

A little bit, my dad's name is Max and his sister married a man named Max. I also have an aunt Sue and my Uncle John (who was named for his father) married a Sue.

I dated a guy once with the same first name as my brother. It usually wasn't a big deal because I was away at college at the time so there wasn't a lot of mixed interaction.

There would be times, however, that I would be telling a story about one of them, receive a strange look, and realize that I needed to specify which one I was talking about because otherwise the story was creepy/weird/whatever.

My name is Kathleen. My mother-in-law is also Kathleen. Thankfully I've always gone by Katie and she goes by Kathy, but it's led to some interesting post office mix-ups over the past 4 years...

We've got some of that in my family but not as bad as yours. Ours are more having the same names on both sides. Ex: I've got an Aunt Dana and married someone who has an Uncle Dana.

My dad is Brian and my husband is Ryan (which ALWAYS gets confused, even though they are different names).

My MIL's maiden name, and my husbands middle name is Andrews/Andrew - and I've got a brother Andrew. Also, if my brother was a girl (and they thought he was until delivery) he was going to be Emily. Can you guess my husbands sisters name? Emily.

Finally, I've got an Aunt Lisa and he has a step sister Lisa.

I also know a family where a brother with a sister named Kerry married a girl named Carrie, but that wasn't my family.

I married a man named Christopher, while my little brother is also Christopher, so for the longest time, my husband was Big Chris and my little brother was Little Chris. Then, my sister started dating another Chris, so it became that my husband was called LuLu {double pronunciation of the first syllable of our last name}, my little brother was Christopher, and the sister's boyfriend was Chris.

My mum's name is Cindy and my Dad's new girlfriend's name is Cyndi. Cyndi also has a daughter with the same name as my sister, and my cousin dated a girl with the same name as well.
I've had a bit of this problem personally. My first girlfriend's middle name was Laura and my second girlfriend's first name was Laura.

Well, my dad has a sister named Joan and his brother Larry (who everybody calls Butch - and he prefers it that way) married a woman named Joni. At the same time, my mom's brother Lynn was married to a Joan.

My mom has a sister named Sandra, and my cousin Chad's second wife is Sandra.

My mom is Jean, and my dad has a cousin named Jean.

My brother is Aaron, and my uncle Jerry's younger daughter is Erin.

And then there's William...

My mom has a brother named William (Bill). Her sister Paula's first husband was named William. She named her second son after him (we called him Billy Jon growing up, but now he goes by Bill). My sister is dating a man named William (Bill) who is also the father of her son Brock William.

We won't go into the handful and a half of friends I have also named William, only one of which goes by Will instead of Bill...

And this is actually a discussion my mom's side of the family had a little over three years ago at Lynn's funeral. And my brother, sister, and I were asked to avoid repeating the pattern if at all possible... (at which point we all laughed)

Father's side:

2 Josephs and a Josephine, and 2 Stephens. Slightly less common there, but I have an Uncle Steve on each side of the family.

We have a similar trend with the name Ken in our family.

My mother married my father, named Ken.
~10 years later, my grandmother married a man named Ken.
My aunt is about to marry a Ken in January.

Also, my parents both have sisters named Betsy (not a nickname for Elizabeth or anything like that, just straight up Betsy).

Also, my dad (Ken) has been married twice, both times to women named Deb who were social workers.

I guess you could say he has a type. lol

My name is Lauren and my sister-in-law's name is Lauren. I am unmarried so we have the same first and last name.

That's the only repeating first name, but there is some coincidental middle name matching. My mom's middle name is Jean, my paternal grandmother's middle name is Jean, and my adopted cousin came with the middle name Jean.

My cousin was dating a guy named Mike which is her brother's name. Not exactly the same, but one of my cousin's married a Lauryn and his sister is named Laura.

Not as much as this! But, my brother is Joshua and my boyfriend's name is also Joshua. Both go by Josh. Brother is often referred to as 'our Josh' whereas boyfriend is 'my Josh'. Context helps a lot in conversations. :p

Also, not quite like this, by close enough I think: my cousins Christopher and Ross (brothers) have both dated girls named Angela (Chris is now married to his Angela). Ross has a son, Theo, with his ex Angela, and our cousin Seth also has a Theo.
