hello, all! a few things for this post:

-i'm writing a story in which one of my main characters goes by a different name daily. any suggestions? i'm avoiding names starting with the letter m. (and for funsies, if you were to change your name for short periods of time, what would you choose?) *

-what female names would have "ted" as a nickname (other than theodora)?

-how would you pronounce the name "helena"?

*eta: the character is female; her real name is mary and her tongue-in-cheek default name is moneypenny, which is why i'm skipping m's. her name is randomly selected from a pre-determined list every morning and sent to her.

I would probably make all of the names have some sort of theme so I could remember what my name was better! They might rhyme or be different variations of the same name or have the same general sound.

Kaelyn, Kayla, Layla, Maile, etc.

Helena I'd say it HEH LAY NUH. But HEH LEN NAH too is nice :)

I like idea of giving your character maybe names with the same letter at the start. I'd love to change my name to other L's. Lily, Lenore, Lizzie, Lucien [I love that for a girl] Lara. :)

I've heard it said a couple of ways. As above poster said and I've also heard it LOO-SHEE-EN. I've just sat for about 5 minutes saying it over to myself trying to decide which way I prefer :p Still haven't decided XD

I say it "LOO-shen".

The only two ways I know of it being pronounced are that way and "Loo-CHEE-en".

Not sure if you're person is male or female character. I actually like your LJ name, that would be a great name for a character.

If I could change my name which is Jenna, I think I would have it be Arianna or Jaelyn..

I often think about what I would change my name to. Or my bar name lol. My favorite is Ava. I like Cameron, too.

Edwina or Edda. I think it's odd that Edward can get a nn Ted but if that's the rule then i'm sure it would work for Edwina too.

If it were an American person I would say "helayna". If it were a British person I would say Helen-ah like Helena Bonham Carter.

Character name-changing: Maybe you could use form of Katherine? Kate, Katie, Kathy, Kathleen, Katrina, Kat, etc. Or Elizabeth: Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty, Bessie, Ella, Elle, Eliza, Liza, Lisa, Elise, Elissa, Lissie, Lisbeth, etc.

If I had to change my name, I'd probably choose something popular, but feminine-sounding, like Christina, Rebecca, Angelina, Natalie, or Isabel.

I really should know how to pronounce "Helena" b/c I went to school with someone with the name. But I couldn't tell you if I'm pronouncing it like she did because it was so long ago. I want to say I pronounce it "huh-lane-uh." But, I could see "heh-lane-uh" and "hell-en-uh".

I wish I could come up with a name for Ted to be a nickname for, but I can't stop thinking about Laurie from Little Women when I try to think about the name, sorry!

i'm glad that you weren't more vague, honestly, because it's been about ten years since i've read the book properly, haha. (my friends and i were likening each other to 'how i met your mother' characters to use their names when we go out, which is all well and good for 'robin', but i'm dedicated and need a proper backstory for why i introduce myself as ted, haha)

I like it heh-lane-uh, because helen-uh reminds me of Montana. I can see Ted or Teddy a nickname for Teresa, or maybe Tilda or Tilden.

-Sarah Dessen wrote a book about a girl who moved around a lot. Her name was Elizabeth and she went by different names in different towns, Lizbet, Beth, Eliza, etc. I think it's a cool idea. I think I would probably use very short names if I changed it a lot (my name is Melissa)... Lily, Lola, Kate, etc. It would be harder to remember/use longer names.

-For some reason, I could see someone named Thecla going by Ted. Maybe Ted's parents are really traditional and she's very modern so it's her way of rebelling?
