I work at Build-a-Bear and I am always coming across spellings that make me go HUH????

See if you can guess these (they're all real, swear to God):

S'enyce

Uhmaiuh

Aahmia

Uhlaynuh

Aymburleigh

That's all I can think of right now, but I'll be back with more.

My middle name is Elena so Uhlaynuh especially makes me cringe. :(

And people thought it was bad that I know an Alaina and Alanna.

Alana/Alanna is not the same as Elena - Elena is from Spanish origins, while Alanna/Alana is Celtic/Irish.

(my name is Alana, and one of my biggest pet peeves is when people pronounce it like Elena. The middle syllable is completely different, damnit!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, Elena is regularly pronounced "uh-lane-uh", and Alanna/Alana as "uh-lan-uh", right? I just ask, because the Alanna I know pronounces her name as "uh-lane-uh".

(Nothing like getting your name mispronounced :()

Sorry for the late late response!

I've seen people go either way on how to pronounce Alana, but the more common/proper pronunciation is like "uh-lah-nuh". I've definitely seen people who pronounce it like Elena, though.

That's how I pronounce my name, anyway, and people getting it wrong (and even arguing with me at times!) is a huge pet peeve of mine.

No problem :).

I've learned to never argue people's names with them; I figure they should know better than me! I imagine it can be a huge pet peeve, so I try to pay attention to how that person pronounces their name.

My best friend's name is Alena (the E is a long E). It annoys the hell out of her when someone pronounces it as Elena.

Are these the kids' names, or the bears' names?

ETA: They're horrible either way, but A LOT more forgivable if these were names little kids came up with for their stuffed animals.

As a teacher who sees spelling mistakes all the time, and gets asked how to spell words frequently, I can tell you that kids would NEVER come up with such horrid spellings.

I know you swear they're real, but I refuse to believe that. :P

And if you tell me they're really real, I'm plugging my ears and LALALAing.

These names are simply too atrocious for real life.

S'enyce doesn't say Essence. Even if we are to believe that the first S makes the "Es" sound, the rest still doesn't make -sense. Literally and figuratively.

Ugh! I think I even prefer the 'y' trend over this (Madisyn) and that says something! ;)

I read up there that S'enyce is supposed to be Essence?! That's...not possible with those letters. Even if the S is really pronounced as an S, it would be...Ess-en-iss.

Crazy people.

S'enyce= Sensei or straight up Sense is all I could manage with this one

Uhmaiuh Amaya?

Aahmia Same Amaya

Uhlaynuh Elana or Alana however you want to spell it (Ah-lane-ah)

Aymburleigh Amber-lee

Did I get it right?

ESSENCE?? Okay fine, I can see the S' and if they dropped the y it might work out phonetically. But really was regular Essence too hard for a kid to spell without jacking it all around and adding an apostrophe? Geez.
