There are too many y's. I usually like unique spellings, but yeah, y has never been my favourite letter.

It's a dilemma: what happens if you choose a spelling because it is used in another language/culture but everyone thinks it's just a random spelling you made up?

Do you explain the spelling to people whenever they get "that look"? Do you revert back to the spelling used in this country? Do you just let them think whatever they're going to think...??

Exactly. That's definitely a dilemma.

I knew it was familiar when I saw it (I have since been informed that their family is Czech) and I immediately thought the same thing you just said.

I confirm it's the Polish/Slavic equivalent of Christine/Christina, and am also bothered that a spelling from another language risks being misunderstood as kree8tyv :(

I have a similar problem - I live in Canada but am of Polish background and my husband is from Poland. We'd like to choose names that work equally well in both languages, and won't be mistaken for kree8tyv spellings! (My LJ name is my name spelled in Polish and then in English so I am familiar with the dilemma)

So far we have thought of a few names that are spelled (if not pronounced) exactly the same way in both languages. My sister is Julia. We could do Adam (#1), Daniel and Sebastian for boys, and Hanna (spelled this way, my granma's name) for a girl. It's quite limiting, but I'd like the names to be able to "travel" so it's always great to think of a new name that works in both languages!

I don't like it, but I do know it's an Eastern European way of spelling it. I have a friend with the name and her family is from Prague.

I just generally have a thing against using a K in any variation of Christine. But I do like the amount of Y's, which is rare for me. :O
