Jun. 15th, 2011 08:57 pmElspeth and Elseveth
WDYT? If you hate them, which is worse? Is someone who uses this name dooming their child to a life of constantly correcting people that their name isn't Elizabeth?
ETA-- I think I may have actually heard Elseveth before, but I realized after double-checking that I was misremembering the spelling/pronunciation of Elsvet.

Date: 2011-06-16 11:31 pm (UTC)It really doesn't. Elven names have definite patterns and this doesn't meet any of them.

Date: 2011-06-16 09:56 am (UTC)I have heard of Elspeth before and never Elseveth ... so I think Elseveth is a bit too out there to use, so my pick would be Elspeth

Date: 2011-06-16 10:04 am (UTC)The latter sounds like someone trying to say Elizabeth with a lisp.

Date: 2011-06-16 10:45 am (UTC)I don't like Elseveth (this is the first time I've heard/seen it). I would say Elseveth is the worst.

Date: 2011-06-16 11:35 am (UTC)My first thought with Elseveth was that it sounded like an elf from LotR, which I saw someone else thought as well. It has a kind of interesting sound, but I don't like the way it looks.

Date: 2011-06-16 01:40 pm (UTC)I've never liked Elspeth, although the dislike is more visual than sound-wise, but I don't connect it with Elizabeth at all.

Date: 2011-06-16 01:43 pm (UTC)But in the competition of different forms of Elizabeth, Erzsébet wins out for me, hands down.

Date: 2011-06-16 09:09 pm (UTC)Other examples from the same series are: Sarra, Collan, Mikel, Taigan, Taig, Glenin, Cailet, Auvry, Elinar, Gorynel (eh...), Lusira, to name a few. There are a lot of variations because everyone is named after a saint, their name being a variation of the saint's name (for instance Sarra being a variation of Sirrala and Collan being a variant of Colynna).
Some characters from her other series are: Sioned, Rohan, Sionell, Sioneva, Siona, Rihani, Rohannon, Rislyn, Jihan, Meiglan, Meig, Pol, Tobin, Ianthe, Andrade, Andry, Maarken, Milar, Jahni, Jahnavi, Audrite, Roelstra, Antalya (I love this name), Gemma, Ryan, Ruala. In that series a lot of the names mean something in the "old tongue" and tend to be based down in different variations. A lot of her place names are actually European place names as well.
