No, don't get me wrong, I think political correctness is taken too far these days as well. This video, however, is just a testament to plain ignorance concerning African American names, which is sad.
i was just going to leave it at my comment below, but the more i think about this, the more i find this comment unacceptable.
it's easy to find this video hilarious when it's not YOUR naming conventions being ridiculed. every cultural group has its own norms--your name sounds ridiculous to some group on the face of the planet, i can just about guarantee it.
but because let me guess, you're white, american, protestant... and therefore you are in a position of power (especially in the united states), you get to taunt without the fear of being taunted.
don't abuse that position; it's one thing to say that you'd never pick the name in the OP for your child or that it's not your style, but it's entirely another to link to a racist video.
oh, and people aren't too sensitive; they're calling you on your gross displays of privilege. humble yourself to recognize it as an opportunity to learn.
Except that I'm not racist. But that's fine. :) You can all berate me for being a stereotypical, insensitive, offensive racist and not worry about making judgments about me that are inaccurate.
It's the internet, folks. Not everything is mean to be taken seriously. It's clearly hard for you to understand, but some things are simply done in jest and not out of hatred. Either way, none of you know me, you're just jumping the gun on one thing you saw that you didn't like a chose to run with. Couldn't matter less to me. :)
1) If you find this video funny, that's racist, because the video relies on racist stereotypes to be funny. Racism isn't just riding on horses in white hoods. It's more subtle things, like making jokes about black people and insinuating that they are unintelligent when they name their children.
2) It being the Internet does not make this not racist, or anything not racist. There are real people behind every one of these screen names and real people made that YouTube video. Something that is offensive when said out loud or written in a book does not cease to be offensive just because someone decides to make a webpage about it.
3) Jokes can be done out of hatred. There are 400 years' worth (probably more) of racial jokes that are meant to be funny but also meant to carry racial hatred and a sense of putting ethnic minority groups in their place. Jest and hatred are not mutually exclusive.
4) Of course we don't know you, so all we have is the things you say on the Internet to judge you by. If you say that you are a wonderful painter but all you post of your own work is stick figures...how are we supposed to judge that you aren't racist if you say racist shit like "this video is hilarious"?
A video about white trash names has little bite in comparison. White people have institutional power in the West, so it's not quite the same - people don't get discriminated against because of names like Ashley and Brittany, but they do get discriminated against when employers see names like Latifah and Shaniqua. So yes, people are still sensitive because racism is not going away and poking fun at me because of my race when there's an ugly, violent, and oppressive history behind that kind of teasing hurts. It's not funny to me at all.

the "punchline" works because it contrasts with the rest of the names and is NOT what you're expecting after 49 names said with head bobs and watermelon and koolaid and fried chicken.
The joke is still that Courtney is a "black name," and making a list of black names is not funny because those sentiments still get people discriminated against in 2011. Sociologists have done studies and found that perceived "black names" are less likely to get called back for an interview when seen on a resume, all other things being equal. It's this kind of attitude that makes that happen.
About the Courtney thing - I didn't take it that way at all, I think it stands out like a sore thumb and is a fairly white name. And as far as it being funny, well, I laughed, so there I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Now, this is just me personally, but frankly I think the horror reaction to this was a little over the top for a stupid youtube video, but whatever. Some people are going to get huffy, and others are going to laugh. Laughers will think the huffy folks are too sensitive, huffy folks think the laughers are too insensitive. Different strokes for different folks?
Well, yes, actually. This video displays contempt primarily for African American female names (as far as I could see). Does the concept of intersectionality ring a bell with you?
