From BabyZone.com: "Names Dads love but Mom's hate"

What do you think?

I've put the names they listed, as well as any also listed in the paragraph explanation for why it was added.  In parenthesis are the reasons they give for why Dads like and Moms hate.

1. Ace (Why they chose this: Dads think Rock Star, Moms think Ace Ventura...)
2. Axel (Dads want to remember their "Rock and Roll youth", Moms want to forget...)
3. Carina/Cara/Honey (Dads like endearing names for girls, Moms want to prevent it...)
4. Cash (Dads like it better than Chase, Sterling, Barclays, Forbes...)
5. Elexis (Dads think it sounds like a computer character, Moms see constantly  having to correct from Alexis)
6. Jack (Dads think it's heroic, like Jack Sparrow, Moms think too popular and would prefer Jackson)
7. Maximus (Dads think its strong, Moms should tell them it's the number one name for dogs)
8. Melissa/Vanessa/Tiffany/Amanda (Dads like "frilly Victorian-Valentine" names.  Moms should remind them that they all reached peak popularity in the 70's and 80's)
9. Peyton [on a boy] (Dads like Peyton Manning, Moms see that it's more popular on girls)
10. Richard Jr. (Dad is named Richard, wants to continue the name.  Mom sees teasing with Dick as the nn and suggests it as a middle)
11. Venus/Desiree/Salome/Lolita/Delilah (Dads who don't want super frilly names often like "slightly naughty names.)
12. Wyatt [and other place names like: Dallas, Houston, Austin, Dakota, Cheyenne.  Also "cowboy names: including Cody, Shane, Rider, Zane, Maverick] (Dads like because its cowboy-ish.  Moms find it out of place in the suburbs or cities like Boston)

Lists like these always irk me a little because they're so...crazy gender-specific. "Moms think this and Dads think this," aaargh!
I know it's all just for fun though, so I'm not taking it very seriously ;)

I don't like any names on there...except for Cara and Dakota. Those are pretty cute.

And on this list, so many of the "dads like" lists are so VERY MACHO MASCULINE AXEL ACE COWBOY NAMES GRUNT. As if all men are straight out of a bad sitcom.

Haha, YES! Exactly!

About the only one I like is Jack and to me that's a nn and I'd name the child John and use Jack as the nn.

I agree with you on the ridiculous gender stereotyping too. Also, is it me, or is there something slightly ... creepy, for want of a better word, in the idea that dads like 'slightly naughty' names for their daughters?

yes! it's totally disgusting and I actually don't find it true. If anything men (who are not name snobs) like simple, feminine names that are a little bit familiar to them. My husband has strong opinions about the kind of names that he thinks sounds "naughty" (he says "stripperish") and is firmly against them.

this exactly. my husband would barf at 99% of the names on this list that "dads love."

This. My boyfriend has mentioned he likes names like Chloe, Sierra, and Lillian (well, okay. He likes Lily, but I feel it's a nickname so I sold him on Lillian, nn Lily.)

Boys names, on the other hand...

OMG, yeah, this. I mean ... if the name sounds 'naughty', why the hell would you want to name your baby that?!

One of the ways I discard names is 'does it sound like it would be on a poster at a strip club?'.

I like the following rule:

Complete these two sentences with your child's first and last names: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you your new President of the United States (or insert your country's leader), __________ __________" and "Get out those dollar bills - we are now presenting, for your enjoyment, on Stage 3 of the Wildcat Club, ______ _____!"

And then think real hard about which sentence it fits better in.

None of these apply to us. I guess sort of #10ish because if it's a boy his first name will be the same as my husband's, but a) he'll go by his middle name, b) my husband's name isn't Richard, and c) I'm fine with that.

The only name my husband really loves that I don't like at all is Rebecca. And I think my dislike for it comes mostly from not particularly liking any of the Becky/Beccas I've known in my life. (Although he doesn't like those nicknames either, so he's willing to let go of it.)

There were a couple others that I guess fall under #8 - he liked them, I told him they were way too 80s to use now. But I forget what those were, and nothing he was THAT attached to.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about #10 and my boyfriend (except, again, not a Richard). He's a Thomas, his dad's a Thomas, and by God... if he and I have kids, our first son will be Thomas and nothing is gonna change that.

In my experience, it's usually women who come up with ridiculous names, moreso than men. Even in my own marriage, although my tastes are much more classic, they're still more unusual and less conservative than the preferences of my husband.

If I remember right, my husband has shot down my suggestions of: Beatrix, Margot, Serafina, Felix, Caspian, and Emmett.

I've vetoed his choices of: Jessica, Lisa, Maria, Eva, Johann, and Ryan.

my husbands 1st choice for a name is tristan. sigh.
he totally veto'd my girl name roslyn. we did both agree on cassidy.
an all of that is strange because we don't plan on any children at all.

Yeah, my husband likes a lot of more "common" names, especially for girls. In addition to Rebecca I've vetoed Amy and Lisa. Though for boys he's quite into the Old Testament names that are making a comeback, but he also likes Thomas and Charles. He also likes a lot of my less-common-but-pretty choices for girls, he just tends to think of the common ones first himself.

yep! story of my life!

Names he vetoed: Lenora, Adele, Hadassah, Gemma, Adelaide, Marianne and Miranda.

Names I vetoed: Jessica, Leah, Danielle, Isabella

Name we agreed on: Susanna

I love that you had Hadassah on your list. :)

My husband actually loves Hadassah - and I love it too, but I worry that it would be weird since we're not Jewish. It is just so connected to that culture to me, it would be like naming our kid Jose when we're not hispanic. But it's so pretty!

as a girl...

slightly naughty names? lolita? ew wtf that's really gross to me

I agree! I'd find it pretty weird if a dad really wanted to name his daughter Lolita!

...also I didn't realize Delilah is a naughty name???

I like most of the "Dad" names... I like Ace, Axel, Cash, Jack, Maximus, Melissa, Amanda, Richard, Venus, Desire, Salome, Wyatt, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Dakota, Cheyenne, Cody, Shane, and Rider.

A cousin recently had a baby and named her Shyanne. This made me make this face -> :( ... why not use Cheyenne - it's a pretty name! -sigh-

Jane is mine and hubby's #1 girl's name, and I told him that I liked the sibset Richard and Jane after the Dick and Jane Reading Collection.

See Spot? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run!

My first would've probably been named Peyton (after Peyton Manning) if she'd been a boy. Luckily she wasn't.

Because all men are cavemen? Why don't they just come out and say "men like names about cars/sexy women/cowboys/body hair, beer commercials, porn and other 'man issues' et. all." Pfffft.

(BTW, sarcasm not directed at OP, but more at the authors of this silly list.)

I like:
Axel
Carina
Sterling
Delilah
Wyatt
Austin
Dakota - on a girl only
Cheyenne
Cody

I actually like a lot of these... I must secretly be a guy... =]

This is pretty stereotypical, like a lot of people have said. I actually really like Carina, Jack, Vanessa, Amanda, Desiree and Whyatt and Austin. To be honest,

I find myself agreeing with 1 and 5 though.

Haha, my male best friend sounds more like the moms on this list. He even told me that Sadie (one of my favorite names) seems "too porn-star-ish" because of the -ie.

I think this "article" would have been better if it was presented as the opinions of one pair of parents-to-be, rather than try to lump all moms- vs dads-to-be together. My husband and I do tend to like very different names (and hate each other's choices!), but I chalk it up to personal taste and having been brought up in different cultures, not because he likes ~cowboy names~ or whatever. ;)
