*I have a particular love for this name, for the sole reason of Shakespeare’s play “Titus Andronicus” in which the character Lavinia is raped, and has her tongue and hands cut off so that she cannot tell anyone what happened to her, or who did it. Despite this, she manages to find a way to express herself and writes her tragedy in the dirt with a stick held in her mouth and stumps. Although I love the message of survival behind the name, I’m not sure I could ever bring myself to name my child this. It also surprises me that Ophelia has become so popular recently, as she was quite made and committed suicide of sorts by drowning herself in a brook. It does have a beautiful sound to it though

* Rhythm added by snoglobel
thank you!

I'm a little confused on these as color names: Bruno, Nila, Giada, Melina, Rory, Rufus, Russell, Xanthe. What colors are they?

Also on edible names: what edible food is Arista? And Sara Lee... haha that just amused me.

For musical names you forgot: Rhythm, (can't have Melody and Harmony without Rhythm). What is Xylia?

Yeah but it depends on how you interpret the root of the word.

It depends on the definition you use. One is "honey" and the other is "black/dark." =]

Bruno: Brown
Giada I'm guessing is Italian for Jade?
Melina - probably something with brown; melanin, etc
Rory - guessing when it's derived from Aurora, so that's sort of a color. It's colorFUL anyway,
Rufus and Russell mean redhead
Xanthe means yellow or blonde
As for Nila, my first instinct is to say black, but hold on.
Checking...
Nope, actually it's a variant of Nelia, which means Yellow

for musical names you could add Condolcezza (should be Con Dolcezza) meaning "with sweetness". Condoleeza Rice's name was supposed to be that or at the very least is derived from it (the story differs depending on who tells it).

who is condoleeza rice?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleezza_Rice

Condolcezza - con-dol-CHE-zah is the best i can do for a pronunciation.

Condleeza = con-do-LEE-zah

When I was pregnant, I had a dream that we decided to name our daughter Ophelia (with the nn 'Phelix'. lol). I think the name (not the nickname) is pretty, but as a theatre nerd, I could never actually name a child after that character.

I have a friend named Viola. . .although I feel stupid that I still can't remember how to pronounce it >_<.
I have a friend nicknamed Blue.
The name Peach reminds me of Peach & Pear from What a Girl Wants. Then it reminds me of Project Runway.
I went to school with a kid named Sterling.
As soon as I read Basil as bay-zil, I thought of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (sp!) and Basil McRae.
Honey always reminds me of Wind at My Back.
Flossie reminds me of The Bobbsey Twins.
Hettie reminds me of Road to Avonlea.
Hilda & Zelda remind me of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch

Ophelia is one of my favorite names ever. I hope it doesn't become so popular as to be rendered unusable.

Not on the list but notable: due to how Japanese works as a language, Aki and Aoi (red and blue) have gained popularity as twin names because there's multiple gender specific variants. Aoimi, Aoiko, Akiko, Akiyo and Aoi are feminine. Aki and Akimi go either way. Akiro, Aoiro and Akitaro are male.

The More You Know.

I'm a Shakespeare actress and to be frank, Ophelia is one of my favourite names and the connotation doesn't faze me. It's a beautiful name and frankly, if I had the skip over all the beautiful Shakespeare names with terrible connotations... I wouldn't be left with much. I love Lavinia as well and I really, seriously don't get why that connotation would deter you. Yes, she goes through hell, but she is so AMAZINGLY courageous and strong and manages to overcome! It's such a wonderful name and so full of strength. Ophelia, yeah she's kind of crazy and pathetic and a little wacky, but the name is beautiful enough that it wouldn't bug me.

I mean, by the same token Regan would be out because Regan is an evil, scheming bitch. And most could count KATE out because Kate's kind of a douchebag. Hell, I would write off Portia because I find her kind of cold and awful. You DEFINITELY could never use Juliet or any variation thereof. Desdemona would be off of most people's lists(which is a shame, it's one of my favourites). Even though there's no real gender there, I wouldn't use Ariel if connotation was a big deal because I find the character unpleasant. And even though her motives are pure, a lot of people would never consider Mariana if they read Shakespeare.

Not to mention other names, male or female, that have major negative association in popular theatre or literature(ESPECIALLY the stuff we read in school where kids with that name are likely to at least be razzed a little at the time). I just don't get how people can get uppity about Ophelia(which happens EVERY TIME I express that I like the name!) and then love Stella or Stanley(I hope this one is obvious), Holden(Catcher in the Rye, which makes me want to shove bamboo under my fingernails), Willie(Death of a Salesman), Abigail(The Crucible, and BOY did the one Abigail in my grade 10 class get it...)or any other number of shitty, shitty characters with whom those names are pretty easily associated.

Sorry for the novel, but that is seriously one thing that just drives me crazy. Names are names. If you gave up on all the ones associated with people who were less than awesome, you'd have nothing left.

Can I just randomly say that 'settle petal' is about the cutest English expression I've ever heard?

First of all: I agree with you!

Having said that, I think it's simply because names like Juliet, Stella and especially Willie are more common than Ophelia. When I hear Juliet, I don't think "Oh, like Romeo&Juliet" but when I hear Ophelia, I do think of Hamlet.

It's still a pretty name, though!

Lavinia's story in Titus Andronicus reminds me of Philomel (in Greek mythology or something.)

I love the name Atticus.

I know a little girl named Lyric.

As far as themes go, I like a LOT of floral/nature names: Iris, Ivy, Willow, Meadow, Haven, Briar, Lily, Rain[e], Sky[e]... I probably will only ever use Iris though because it's my favorite I don't want my children's names to be obviously themed. My children WILL all be named after songs, but I don't think that's quite as obvious as "Oh this is Iris Smith, and her sisters Ivy and Lily!"

Some that I am considering are Sadie and Kate, because I like the names as well as the songs. "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is what my first daughter WILL be named after. Any successive daughters are up for debate lol.
