Yes, Cedric Diggory is a Harry Potter character, he is mainly in the fourth book/movie, The Goblet of Fire. He is one of the four students that participate in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I don't think I've ever met anyone that hasn't seen BOTH of those series! No desire to see/read them? Hatred of Pop Culture? ;) I bend under peer pressure and obviously have succumbed to reading and seeing both version of both series'.
I do tend to like older sounding names like Arthur and Alice...And my daughter's name is Cléa which I think has that same old fashioned effect. I just can't help but like Olga.
Ahh, but see, none of those other names have the same effect for me! I think Clea is actually quite young and sweet while also being very sophisticated. Same with Alice and Arthur.
Olga is on the same page with me as Camille. Immediate "ewww" reaction because to me they both bring to mind a particular image that is not generally one I like. Olga is a hunched little old lady with a temper and Camille is a 60+ lady who tries too hard to look young and has a baseball-glove melanoma tan.
Camille here (in French Canada) is actually pronounced very differently like "Camiye". I don't think it sounds old at all, but Camille with the "l" sounding as "l's" kinda does. I guess my only reference with Olga is this young person I once met and she was lively and beautiful and free spirited and that's the image that I get.
I pronounce Olga in my first language which is French, so it sounds different that the English way. The "Ol" part is very soft and not from the back of the throat, although I don't know how to explain it.:)
I have no knowledge of Harry Potter so that doesn't really bother me. It's a pretty common name in French but it's one of the only one that we both like that isn't been used by anyone we know.
I don't like the name Olga, because it conjures up an image of an older, large woman. I also find the sound of the L next to the G awkward to pronounce. I like Cedric, but it does make me think of Harry Potter!
Cedric makes me think of Harry Potter, since I've never seen it anywhere else. Olga has grown on me since I started reading the Night Watch series. I like it, but I wouldn't use it myself.
funny, i just met a Cedric tonight. makes me think of Cedric Diggory too...and then Cedric the Entertainer, but i don't know much/anything about him. Not a bad name, tho probably not one i'd use myself. really don't like the name Olga, myself. I've heard the Russian nn for it, Olya or Ollia, which sound a lot better to me.
Dislike Olga. It only makes me think of leather-faced, old, Hungarian women. I thought of Cedric the Entertainer before I thought of Cedric Diggory, but I still like the name nonetheless.
