Has a person you've known or a fictional character ever destroyed a name for you?

For instance, I think I would really love the names Forest and Ernest if I didn't immediately think of Gump and Scared Stupid.

I like Forest better because of Forest Gump, actually.

Pretty much name from Twilight is off my list... which is hard because my name is Rosalie.

eh. It's a pretty old movie... I think kids would miss the disability connection by then. Run, Forest, Run, will probably NEVER get old, though!

Rosalie is a beautiful name. Honestly, Rosalie is my #1 but because of Twilight, I wouldn't feel comfortable naming my daughter that.

But I've almost gotten to the point where I want to say f*** society! I'm doing it anyway! I wish I had that kind of mindset.

Fwiw, most adults still think of the Grateful Dead song Rosalee McFall, which is what I was named for. One of my coworkers even put that as my name in his phone contacts! And I am 26 so not GD generation.

I have a younger relative named Forrest.. he would have been around 10 or so when the movie came out! wonder how that worked out for him (I only met him once at a wedding back in '92 and haven't seen him since. was the first time I ever heard the name.)

anyway.. I was totally gonna post this same question :) I <3 Oscar right now and am pregnant with, you know, something like a 50% chance of having a boy. if anyone were to call my kid "Oscar the Grouch" I would have to punch them. even if it was my MIL (the most likely, my husband thinks).

My father's name is Oscar. He never was called that. So maybe that will help you and your husband decide.

Yeah, I have a list...

My ex-best friend has forever ruined the name Kate for me. She turned into a controlling, manipulative psycho and spent a lot of time accusing me of trying to steal her boyfriend. :\

Twilight has forever ruined Bella for me, and thus any name that Belle or Bella would be a nickname for (Isabella being my favorite).

I also have yet to meet a Dustin who wasn't a jerk or an Amanda that I liked. And all of the women I've known who went by Vicky/Vicki have been crazy.

Isabelle/a.

Damn Twilight.

Otherwise, for every name I like that would be ruined by someone I know, I also know someone with that name who is very nice. Like, I know two Madelines -- one is a bitch, but the other is really sweet.

I graduated with a girl named Tierney. I thought her name was beautiful, but her personality was annoying, bitchy, and stuck-up. Since she's the only one with that name I've ever met, I don't think I could ever use it on a child. It's too linked with this dumb girl for me.

However, on the contrary, the name Atticus, IMO, is awesome. I wouldn't have it as a first name (I think my boyfriend would cringe) but it's a great middle name. And Atticus Finch makes it all the more attractive, as he's possibly my favorite fictional character, ever.

There's too many to name them all...

Twilight has definitely ruined Isabella/Bella for me. I used to love Olivia, but now there's one on almost every show I watch. Same for Olivier, I still like the name but I worked with two Oliviers that I did NOT like.

The movie The Ring has ruined Samara for me. I love that name but I would forever be terrified of my child. Same with Carol-Ann from Poltergeist.

And Phoebe and Chandler are other names that I like but are too recognizable because of a show.

Twilight killed Jasper and Edward. I hope I'll be able to revive them in a few years but it would be a miracle.

My cousin was named Forrest about a year *before* the movie came out. I'm pretty sure people still asked his mom if he was named after the movie.

I wouldn't have used her name anyway, but the name Sarah usually reminds me of a roommate I didn't get along with.

Completely agreed. There have been numerous times where I've mentioned names I liked and someone will say, "Oooh, someone's a Harry Potter fan!" Actually, no, I don't give a rat's ass about that entire franchise. By the time I have kids, though, I'm hoping maybe it will have faded more from the general public's memory a bit.

I liked the names Julie and Emily when I was younger, but two ex-boyfriends dated girls with those names and they went out of their way to harass me. I hate that it killed those names for me.

I'm a teacher, and my job has killed dozens of names that I like.
