Teddy

I desperately want a son to call Teddy someday. My husband loves it too.
The problem is, he hates Theodore.

I have tried to defend Theodore by going to my family and friends for backup...but they all dislike it/associate it with Alvin & the Chipmunks. Maybe I love the name because I never watched that show.

Anyway, I think just plain old Ted is boring as a name, and Teddy is too childish to be his given name.

To give you an idea of my taste in boys' names, favorites are:
Joseph, Emmett, Simon, and something with the nn Teddy.

Any suggestions to fit my style?

I think "Edward" could work for "Teddy"...

Just like William can become Bill, Edward can become Teddy ;)

Haha no worries! I didn't know about this until he died a couple years ago.

My neighbour's son is Edward and goes by Ted or Teddy :) I always thought that was just a normal thing and it surprised me so much when people hadn't heard of it.

Definitely. Ted is a not uncommon nn for Edward.

Oh and some suggestions would be:

William
Henry
Louis/Lewis
Alexander
Owen
Charles
Conrad
Miles
Matthias
Asher
Francis
Graham
Sterling
Roman
Wyatt
Carter
Calvin
Thaddeus (could be a full name for Teddy?)
Timothy (I could see Teddy used here too)
Gideon
Thomas (Teddy as a nn?)

I'm the same way with Louis actually. I LOVE the nn Louie for a little boy but my husband doesn't like Louis.

I second the Thaddeus suggestion. Love that name.

I love Theodore! I used to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks too but I don't immediately associate the name with the show (more like President Roosevelt)
I've heard people say Teddy could also be a nickname for Edward.

Just have to point this out though, I thought it was funny that Simon was also on your list - that was the third Chipmunk! Though I think that names been successfully stolen back from Chipmunk fame thanks to Mr. Cowell...

What about Thaddeus? I'm not a fan of it, but you might be.

That's the only thing I can think of that hasn't already been suggested, so I'll just throw it out there that I don't think the chipmunk Theodore is the worst thing in the world to be associated with, and anyway I'll be very surprised if any of his classmates know who Alvin and the Chipmunks are. They've really gone out of style in the last decade, with the movies as an ultimately not long-lasting exception. Heck, I'm a teenager and I associate the name with the president before the chipmunk, because it didn't play a very big role in my childhood, or in the childhood of most of the people I know.

Ah, I see Thaddeus has already been brought up. That's what I get for only skimming. Oh well.

My husband's middle name is Edward and he goes my Ted (Teddy as a little boy for short). Ted(dy) is an acceptable nn for Edward, but not as commonly used in the US. I think Edward goes well with the names you said you like. :)

My old neighbor's name was Ted. Their son's name was Thaddeus and I always wondered if the dad's name wasn't Thaddeus as well or if they'd just named him that because it's close to Theodore?

ETA-- Doesn't rally matter to your situation, but I thought I'd share-- We may name a son after my husband and would likely call him either Edward or Ward.

Putting in another vote for Edward and Edmond/Edmund.

Incidentally, I also love Joseph and Simon. You might also like Nathan?

Juliet
Lily
Rose
Mara
Miriam
Laura
Beth
Rosemary
Claire
Eleanor
Ivy

That's probably enough to start with...

Those are all adorable names. I'd kinda forgotten, I had a thing for Cora as a kid!

I know what you mean about having a hundred favorites and still being particular-- me and my roommate have been trying to name her new cat, and even though there's so many, many names that I love, I hate almost everything she thinks up! Of course, that may partly be because I am a staunch proponent of Dignified Names For Animals, while she considers things like Munchkin and Princess to be valid options. :(

No one has suggested this, but I have a grandfather named Frederick, and he goes by Ted.
