[identity profile] lovelymae.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I live in the US and in a part of the country where the name Freya is not used AT ALL.
By some chance my friend said the name but she said it "Frey-ya." Whereas I would say "Frey-a."
How would you, Baby Namers, pronounce this name? I am going to be really embarrassed if both of us are wrong and it is pronounced a completely different way.

Also, do you prefer Juliet or Juliette? I can't decide. Right now I am leaning towards Juliet.

Edited to add:

Frey-YAH as opposed to Frey-ah. Like the y ends the first syllable and begins the first. Whereas the way I say it, the y ends the first syllable and does not carry over. "Frey- ah" Sounds completely different to me and the difference was easily noticed by both of us. I guess I just don't know how to spell phonetically. It is a small difference but still...

They kind of sound the same, Frey-a is more like how I'd say it though.

I prefer Juliet.

Errr... Frey-ya and Frey-a aren't very different, to me. Unless the speaker were enunciating big time, I'd have to be listening very closely in order to hear that slight difference.

Consciously, I would probably pronounce it Frey-a, but if I were being speech lazy or speaking fast, it would probably come out more like Frey-ya (heavy on that second "y").

I usually lean toward Juliette. I think it looks prettier, but sometimes I think it looks too princess-y... =/

There is no difference between Frey-ya and Frey-a to me. I feel like you'd have to really enunciate the -ya in order to hear it.

I prefer Juliet. Juliette is a little "much" for me. I think Juliet looks cleaner.

My daughter's name is Juliette. I chose that spelling because I wanted to avoid the obvious Romeo & Juliet reference, and also because I think the "ette" looks pretty written out. :)

I agree, I'm not sure how they are pronouncing them differently.

I don't see the difference in pronunciation between Frey-ya and Frey-a.
But I love the name and am going to use it myself in the future.
I prefer Juliet

Yeah... at least for me, there's no difference between Frey-ya and Frey-a. I'm even saying both out loud, and there's not even a subtle difference.

I prefer Juliet. Juliette almost seems to me like someone's trying to make the name more frilly.

I knew a little girl named Freya(Freja) in Denmark and it was pronounced Fry -uh I would pronounce it that way and not Frey-a or Frey-ya

Frey-a is how I'd say it. I can't decide if I like it though.

And Juliet. The -ette seems too frilly for my taste.

I think I pronounce it "frey-ah". I feel like I read a book in class where that name was used, and I'm trying to remember how my prof pronounced it.

Hmm. . .I keep going back and forth on which spelling I prefer.

The Romeo & Juliet reference is where I get hung up too.

I like Freya...I think I say it the way you do. Like the word "fray" with an "uh" sound at the end...and I much prefer Juliet to Juliette. :)

I like to say JU-liet rather than Juli-ETTE, so I prefer the shorter spelling.

I say it "fray-uh." Maybe someone in the South would say it "Fray-YAH." :) I've never actually heard it pronounced though.

I totally get what you are saying about the "y". I think someone said they didn't see a difference between "yah" and "ah". I don't understand that...? I mean...the "y" completely changes the way you would say it. That is like saying "yapple" sounds the same as "apple."

PS...I love your Z icon! I think someone else in this community is a Like fan as well! Glad to see they are getting more fans!

I don't think she does carry "y" sound over to the second syllable. That is the difference between her and her friend. I can definitely hear a difference when I say "Fray-yah" and "Fray-uh", myself. So I get what she is saying.

Love your Simon icon! He was amazing in that scene. It sucks we have to wait till November for new episodes. :(
