At work the other day, people were talking about this girl named Loreal (pronounced Laurel). Apparently she saw a L'Oreal ad and said, "That's my name!" and her mom corrected her.
Wow. If I saw "Loreal" written out somewhere, I'd pronounce it "Lor-REAL" at first glance, and L'Oreal on second. Never Laurel, that doesn't make sense.
It's like that line from The Colbert Report where Stephen Colber finds out Scrabble is now allowing names to be used as word: "My new name is Xyyczuxqyq. You pronounce it 'Stephen'."
