At work the other day, people were talking about this girl named Loreal (pronounced Laurel). Apparently she saw a L'Oreal ad and said, "That's my name!" and her mom corrected her.

Wow. If I saw "Loreal" written out somewhere, I'd pronounce it "Lor-REAL" at first glance, and L'Oreal on second. Never Laurel, that doesn't make sense.

I could see Lorel, but Loreal is in no way pronounced Laurel. You can't just make up pronunciations, people!
