One of the 9th graders in my homeroom is named Hawley. Usually I hate non-traditional spellings, but I love it in this case.

Hawley has a completely different feel to me than Holly does.

Thoughts?

It sounds like someone who can't say Harley.

I didn't even associate it with Holly at first.

I think it's incredibly ugly, to be honest. I think it looks masculine and sounds ugly. I emphasize the "HAW-ley" not like Holly, which I say like "Hah-LY."

It also sounds like a eastern accented version of Holly.

I would never have known that was supposed to be Holly. I don't like it at all.

Jesus, that's horrible D:

I read that like HAW-lee (actually, in my head it sounded more like whore-lee) and didn't even get that it was Holly until you mentioned it.

That's awful. Like everyone else, I had no idea that it was Holly. Looks like how I've heard Southerners pronounce Holly.

I never would have guessed that "Hawley" was supposed to be "Holly". I pronounce them completely differently.

it's the difference between stubbing your toe (AAAHHHHH) and seeing a cute kitten (awwwww).

in some American dialects those two sounds have merged, and people either have the "ah" or "aw" for both. I'm a linguist!

I know someone with it as a surname, so the idea of it being a replacement for Holly didn't even come close to occurring to me. If it were ever to be a proper first name, that spelling seems more masculine to me.

The only word that comes to mind is "yucky."
