What are your opinions on the name Avery for a girl?

I honestly NEVER knew this was originally a boy's name. The first and only time I ever heard it, it was used on a girl (about ten years ago) and I always just figured it was a girl's name. So to me it sounds very feminine and not masculine at all.

I normally HATE boy's names on girls. I hate Riley, Peyton, Harley (not that I even consider that a name, but still...), Madison, Mackenzie, etc., and I feel like I shouldn't like Avery, but I do. I don't know if I could ever use it though, because... well, I don't want a little girl with a boy's name.

Is naming a girl Avery like naming a girl Leslie or Kelly or Shannon (almost completely gone to the girls)? Or like naming a girl Riley or Peyton (kinda in the middle, now socially deemed okay for either sex)? Or like naming a girl Ethan or Allan or Ryan (almost completely still thought of as boy's names. yes I know, half of you know girls named Ryan and its so super cool and cute and they adore their names, but to society at large, Ryan is still very much a boy's name, I think)?

Ahhh I'm conflicted.

If you hate Avery for a girl is it because it's traditionally a male name?

I think it's in the middle as far as male vs. female name

I however don't like it for a girl. It doesn't bother me as much as others do, but it just sounds more masculine to me.

I also only know one person with this name and they happen to be an adult male so I suppose that could have something to do with my opinion.

Avery is one I like on girls too. It's a name I thought I made up, way back when I was liked 13 or so. I though aviary was a really pretty word, changed it to Avary or Avery instead. Voila! A couple years later I got a name book and realized it already existed. It was in the girls section too though, and this was the late 80s.

It's ok on a boy, but honestly, to me it will always be mostly a girl name. As of yet, I've not actually met anyone of either gender with the name, so all I have it my own opinion.

I picture it a girls name more than a boys name and I think its cute.

But then again I think alot of boys names work really well on girls, so I dont know.

my cousin named her son Avery, but i've also known a girl with the name. I actually prefer it for a girl, even though my cousin's son is really good and cute and it fits him.

I've always thought of Avery being in the same ship as Ashley. It used to be a boys name, but its pretty much gone over to the girls. I've never met a boy named Avery, and I personally think it's much better on a girl, even though I don't particularily like the name itself. (nothing wrong with the name, it's just the name of a girl I don't care for)

i agree with your first 2 sentences.

but the first Avery I ever knew was a really nice cute boy named Avery when we were in 7th grade. i LOVED his name. i would probably never use it because i wouldn't give it to a girl because i think of it as a boys name, but i couldn't use it on a boy because everyone ELSE thinks it's a girls name.

LOL.. I LOVE Avery. My neices name is Avery Jade so I'm partial.
My step-son is Riley Allen
My nephew is Peyton Michael... so I've got them all up my alley!
OH - and I went to high school with a girl named Ryan and a girl named Michael... didn't know either of their middle names tho.

Most of the kids in my family (My husbands neices and nephews) are all different names - some unisexual... Riley Allen, Misty Nicole, Bailey Danielle, Peyton Michael, Nova, Devilynn (which to this day I don't understand... step sisters daughter), and Autumn.... so we're looking for something different if what we have is a girl. If not, it's Damon Allen for a boy (family names).

=0 Devilynn??? ugh,that's terrible!

I also knew a girl name Rian & one named Mychael (sp?) in high school.

I think it's in the middle, like Riley or Peyton. I don't like it on a girl, but I don't like boys names on girls in general, and I do consider Avery a boys name; but I don't HATE it for a girl. It just sounds a bit masculine to me.

I think Avery is truely unisex.
When I look at it, I don't immediately think "boy" or "girl".

The first time I heard it was on the show Murphy Brown.
Candice Bergen's character Murphy's mother was named Avery. She died on the show (and the actress who played her died IRL also) and when Murphy had a baby she named him Avery in honour of her mother.

ps: I also have a unisex name, but I think mine sounds more like a girl's name.

I agree, I think Avery is one of the few names that is truly unisex.

I always thought it was a girls name as well. I knew a girl when I worked at a daycare whose name was Avery Elizabeth. She was adorable. I like it for a girl best but I think its on the fence as far as girl boy ratios go :)

Hmmm...whether or not it's a name for a girl or a boy, it's still very much a name of the moment. Plus I would say if you don't want to be one of 'those people' I'd stay away from it. We need to save some names for the boys :P

I babysat a little boy named Avery, but all other Averys that I've known [of] have been female. I'm not fond of the name in general, though, for a boy or girl.

My cousin had a baby girl a month ago and named her Avery. To me that was absolutely normal--I think it's a girl name. But most everyone was like, "Dude, that's a boy name. I don't like it." And I didn't get that at all, because to me it's always been a girl name, though I'm not sure why. *shrugs* JMO.

I've actually never met anyone with this name.. but I'd guess it to be equivalent to Ashley, in terms of unisexness. As in, everyone knows it's technically both, and know of men with the name, but probably would fear naming a boy that nowadays because of all the girls with the name.

I'm not too sure though.

I too only recently found out it was originally a boys name, but to me it seems so feminine. So for me it would be like naming a girl Leslie or Kelly or Shannon.

I think it's one of the ones that's in the middle & used (confusingly) for both as of late. personally, I think it should be a boy's name but would never use it because it sounds... how do I say it right... kind of sissy? but I feel that way about the name Emery or Ellory too. I think that's just my feeling though, not a common conception.

I like it better for a girl than a boy but I know people of both sexes with that name. So it can really go either way.

I was introduced to that name when I was obsessed with Hanson, like 10 years ago. Avery is one of their little sisters, so I consider it a girl's name.

My husband and I actually settled it today and if our next one is a girl we are using Avery- but then again I named my daughter Riley. So you may not want my opinion.
