i used to never be a nickname person until recently. i think they're useful. i'd rather not name my child something that they would share with five or more other kids. but kids want to fit in with their peers, and nicknames let that happen. er... the nicknames would at least be familiar to six year olds.

i've started to like certain names just because i like their nicknames.

lucille - lucy
eloise - elly
penelope - penny
agatha - aggie
francesca - franny

louis - lou, louie
patrick - pat
abraham - abe

i wouldn't use agatha, but i think it's cute for some reason. and i love the nickname franny because of franny and zooey.

eloise and lucille are my favorite, anyway. i've liked those for forever. i've always been drawn to penelope, but never realized the nickname penny is cute until recently... i've always like francesca, but i'm not italian at all. german/irish right here. and american... i guess. >:P

My favourite camper last summer was a girl named Franny. That was her actual name. Her older brothers name was Barnett ("Barney").

I know a girl named (or NNed) Ellie. I like it. I also like Lucy and Penny. Franny and Aggie are horrible IMO.

I like Abe but not the others for the boys.

*points to icon* - I have an Eloise and we call her Ellie. I'm fond of Agatha too, but the hubby would never go for that one.

despite Franny and Zooey I don't know how you could take a beautiful name like Francesca and turn it into plain-Jane Franny.

I do like the name Jane actually

it's probably because I work in a very Italian area but I know alot of women named Francesca, Fiorella, Illuminata, Cinzia, Alessandra etc so they don't seem too long or too exotic for every day use to me.

I like Eloise :)
I find it quite Romantic.
It reminds me of Abelard and Heloise.

Louis is already pronounced Louie... it's french.
Franny from Franchesca is horrible, it sounds like Fanny which is another awful name. I think Fanny means your backside in america, right? well in england it means ummm... your front lol. I know a girl named Franny Boils!

My biggest pet peeve is naming a baby something JUST so you can use the nickname. Why dont you just use the nickname AS the name?

(LOVE Eloise and Penelope though)

I disagree totally. If your daughter Penny ever wants to sit on the Supreme Court or something, she might want the option of going by Penelope.

I love Anne because it has the nickname Nan, and Elizabeth because of its myriad nns. Bette, Betsy, Lily, Lizzie, etc.

I'm the opposite, I adore the name Francesca but I hate the nn Franny. My grandma's name was Frances though, so I'd never use Francesca cause I plan on using Frances as my first daughters mn.

I love Penelope, not too crazy about the others. I like Lucy, but not Lucille.

although Franny would be rather sweet on a little girl. I'm picturing someone my age named Franny, though.
