This is an odd request, but I need help!

We have a birthday party this weekend for our neighbor's youngest daughter. My youngest daughter tried to eat the invitation...including the girl's name. The entire family is soft spoken so it's taken a few months just to learn half of their names, and I don't feel comfortable having to ask them what their names are, I'd be rather embarrassed! So, her name is on this paper and it's in slightly sloppy cursive and half smeared and eaten....

From what I've heard it sounds like the IUD birth control Mirena (?). This is what I can make out _a_ _na. I believe the first letter is an M by what's left of it...And there is an 'i' in there between the 'n' and 'a' and I'm only guessing there are two letters between them and not just one. there's a definate dot on one of the swoops, but it's like A undotted I dotted I N A.

I hope some of you are good puzzle solvers cause I would like to, one, be able to say her name when I say happy birthday to her, but I'd also like to write her name on her card, my guess is Marina, but I'd hate to guess and have it be wrong:\

Is there some reason you don't want to ask your neighbour? Because I'd just knock on the door/give her a ring and say 'I'm really sorry but I can't remember your daughter's name and my kid ate the invitation, could you tell me what it is?'. I think 'my kid ate it' would make her laugh or sympathise and help ensure she's not offended. Or you could say 'can I just check how you spell your daughter's name? I'd hate to get it wrong on her card'.

With all the kre8iv spelling people use you can get away with that excuse even if they turn out to have a really common name, lol.

Our little community is odd, friendly, but keep to themselves. As it is, we are the friendliest with these people and we communicate namely through our children. Her girls delievered the invitation. We swap food and sweets and always have the kids deliever it. My husband is more outgoing and has no problems going over there but I am nervous about taking the next step and being more friendly than they might feel comfortable with. But even he doesn't really want to go over and ask what her name is. Heck, took us two months to figure out what our neighbor lady's name is and only because it was at the bottom of the invitation and was spared in the baby attack! And I'm rather surprised they've invited us to the party as it is.

I'm just going to come out and say it, it's time to put on your big girl panties and make the first step to be friends with this family. Meeting new people can be scary but they seem friendly enough and they like you enough to invite you to a birthday party. So call her and ask how the name is spelled. If you don't have a phone number maybe pop over and ask. Friendship takes the effort of both parties; it doesn't happen magically. If you're not interested in being their friend then it doesn't matter.

Military communities aren't the same as regular neighbors. People do their own thing, they don't branch out much. Why go through the hassle of making friends when they are just going to move soon. These neighbors move next month, as do the family my oldest has made friend's with. There's already been several to move out so we're cutting our neighborhood in half in a month.

Ok so if they are moving in a month, you don't have to worry about any long standing awkwardness or embarassment so you should still just ask her name :)

I would call and say my child chewed the invitation and you want to make sure you spell it right. This saves you the embarrassment of not knowing it.

I would either ask a mutual friend, check on Facebook if you're friends with her and finally, if all else failed, I would simply check with the neighbour how to spell the name, saying "my daughter chewed on the invitation!"

Can't you just write Happy Birthday! on the card or just include a gift card with present that says Happy Birthday! Best Wishes, your name here

yea, on the inside of the card I put "happy birthday from your neighbors" and put our names, and on the outside of the card I drew a big silver 5, hahaha. Maybe her name will be on the cake!

Why not put FOR THE BIRTHDAY GIRL on the envelope and just sign your names on the inside? No one will notice its not labeled to her name. It'll be in with the pile of gifts :-)
