Jul. 18th, 2006 02:03 pmThe only baby name book I have as yet is The New Jewish Baby Book by Anita Diamant. It is not even a baby name book per se, it just has a section with names in it. But I digress. I was looking through it today and thought I would post some names I really like, but are not on my list (Asher, Elijah, and Caleb for boys and Mirah, Adara, and Leah for girls) because relatives already have them, or my boyfriend disapproves, or they are a little too Hebrew for my non Jewish family, and see what you all think. Don't worry about hurting my feelings if you don't like them, as I said they aren't on my "official list" right now anyhow.
Boys
Aaron
Ariel
Gideon
Isaac
Nathaniel
Seth (this one doesn't work because it doesn't go with the last name Schifman, try to say it 5 times fast)
Girls
Aviva
Aliyah
Chaya
Devorah
Delilah
Hadassah
Hannah
Keturah
Kinneret
Levana
Shoshana

Date: 2006-07-18 06:24 pm (UTC)Hadassah and anything after Hannah on your girls list seem too almost mean to give a kid now. I could handle someone doing it as a middle name for religious or heritage reasons though.
What does Aviva mean? and Chaya? They seem like cool names so I'm just curious.

Date: 2006-07-18 06:46 pm (UTC)Yeah, I wouldn't use Ariel because of the little mermaid association, among other things, though it is pronounced differently (Ahri-el). I just really like the meaning, "lion of God".
I agree with you about the names under Hannah, though I really like them. The go under the heading of "A little too Hebrew for my non Jewish family". Although I adore Kinneret and may persuade my boyfriend to let use it as a middle name one day.
And I see

Date: 2006-07-18 10:38 pm (UTC)it means fire and Adar is also one of the months on the Jewish calendar so it's kind of like naming someone April.

Date: 2006-07-18 06:40 pm (UTC)You and your sister have lovely Hebrew names :)
When I finish converting my Hebrew name will be Elana, which means "tree" and I haven't decided if I should select another name as well.

Date: 2006-07-18 06:53 pm (UTC)I'm not expecting or anything, but I know it's gonna be a struggle for me to find a name that works really well both in Hebrew and in English and is still unique. I love the names on your main list by the way, Leah is one of my absolute favourites.

Date: 2006-07-20 06:36 pm (UTC)Yeah it would be hard to find a name that works in both Hebrew and English, very few are pronounced (or spelled!) the same way in both languages.

Date: 2006-07-20 06:39 pm (UTC)Shet (Sheht)
From the Hebrew, "appointed"; in the Bible (Genesis), one of Adam's sons. This name is not recommended, because ub Hebrew it means "buttocks." The Englisj form is Seth.
So you have a good reason for really disliking it!

Date: 2006-07-18 09:23 pm (UTC)Ariel -- Love it, even for a boy. Maybe not in the states though.
Gideon -- One of my favorites. I love the nn Gid, and I love the Bible character. So inspiring.
Isaac -- Like it.
Nathaniel -- Really like it.
Seth -- Really like, but it def. wouldn't work with the last name you mention.
Aviva -- LOVE IT
Aliya -- Like it, but it doesn't sound Hebrew to me. LOL.
Chaya -- Meh. There is a Thai restaurant here called Chayo.
Devorah -- Don't like. Don't like Deborah either.
Delilah -- it's okay, but don't like the story--ditto
Hadassah -- I like it, but it sounds like a place to me. I would use as a mn
Hannah -- Hate. BORing
Keturah -- Don't like
Kinneret -- Don't like
Levana -- Don't like
Shoshana -- LOVE
Tzipporah -- Same feeling a Hadassah

Date: 2006-07-19 01:45 am (UTC)As far as I know "Nathaniel" is the most common transliteration of the Hebrew name Netanel. But since it is a transliteration you could spell it any number of ways I suppose.
You could spell Shoshana with or without an "h" and with one "n" or two, whichever you prefer, since it is also a transliteration. But I do like the way you spelled it.

Date: 2006-07-19 08:34 pm (UTC)Ariel - Ok, but I'll admit I like this more for a girl now.
Gideon - Always makes me think "get it on."
Isaac - Love
Nathaniel - Nice
Seth - My ex-boyfriends name. I actually never liked it. It's hard to say clearly. I always had saying "what?" when I said his name.
Aviva - Love
Aliyah - Too pop culture for me now.
Chaya - Nice
Devorah - Nms
Delilah - Nice
Hadassah - Nms
Hannah - Too overdone
Keturah - Nice
Kinneret - Love
Levana - Eh
Shoshana - Nice
Tzipporah - Would be cool on someone who could pull it off.

Date: 2006-07-20 06:47 pm (UTC)and I agree Tzipporah would have to have alot of chutzpah to pull of the name.
