[identity profile] bambiblake007.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

i have a question.
do you (or someone you kno) have a common (or slightly common) easy to pronounce name that is constantly mispronounced?

the name i go by most is my middle name. which is Katherine.
very common name, very easy to pronounce, no?
but most of my family members pronounce it Kath-Ern, rather than Kath-Er-In, especially my mom (she named me for cryin out loud lol)

i live in Tennessee so idk if this is a southern dialect thing or not, but sometimes it annoys me (most times i don't even recognize it tbh) i mean, it's been happening for 26yrs now, so i'm fairly used to it, and i guess it's not something i can't reallyl change since like 99% of my family pronounce it that way. what's funny is when i introduce myself to ppl, i pronounce it as Kath-Er-In not Kath-Ern.

the reason i asked this question is because i was in CVS the other day and this little girl was named Jessica (very easy name to pronounce you would think) but her grandmother kept pronouncing it Jess-Kuh. and i told my mom that i hated that. like, if she couldn't pronounce the name she should just call the lil girl by a nickname or something imo..of course, my mom didn't do that 0_o

no matter what your name is, someone somewhere is going to fuck it up.

yes, I agree with this. I was at a funeral a few weeks ago and when they read the eulogy, the names of all the people that the deceased had been survived by were mispronounced, and they were simple. This southern baptist preacher said Justice instead of Justin, DIE-lawn instead of dylan, and Jenna instead of Gina. Awful.

I live in Georgia and I say "cath-rin," as do most people I know. I am guilty of "jess-kuh" occasionally. I try not to because I know it makes me sound dumb, but it's just one of those things. I'm a fast talker so the "ih" in "jess-ih-kuh" gets smushed.

My friend Leah ("lee-UH") is constantly called Lee. My friend Kylie ("KY-lee") gets called Kyle or "kee-lee" occasionally. Most people pronounce my name "MUH-liss-uh" although I say it more like "mel-ISS-ah".

I love the Hispanic pronunciation of my name: "may-LEE-suh" but somehow I think it would sound really pretentious if *I* asked non-Spanish-speakers to call me that lol.

I'm Diana and I'm constantly getting called Diane. I hate it so much - to the point now where it's supposed to be pronounced dye-an-nah but I don't care if you say dee-an-nah, just as long as you don't say dye-anne. There's a third syllable there, it's not optional!

haha..I'm Dianne and get called Diana a lot. I don't even care anymore, but it used to bug me

Thats so weird, people never (I wanted to say almost never, but when I think about it, yeah, everyone's done it at least once) call me Diana, even after I introduce myself and say my name. "Hi, I'm Diana!" "Nice to meet you, Diane." Um, what? Seriously, next time that happens I'm going to say "Nice to meet you, Kevin" - unless their name is actually Kevin, and then I'm saying Angela. Kinda makes me angry that they call you Diana, because where are those people when meeting me? I always get Diane at least on the first go (I wind up saying "It's Diana, just like the princess and the singer!) and then they usually still go "Diane, right?" Wrong.

We are obviously meeting each other's people!! That's the only explanation I can come up with LOL

I'm Joanna, but I always get called Joanne. Damn Anne names >:(

People call me Joanne at work where I'm wearing a NAME TAG with my name on it correctly and I feel like dying inside and dropping to my knees all WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

I'm pretty sure it's that good ol' southern dialect. On both accounts. I think it's something you've got to get used to unless you move up north somewhere. :B

my name is christine and i am forever being called christina and kristen, occasionally kirsten, christy, christa, chrissy, or any other chris-variant you can think of. i once had someone ask me why my parents left the "A" off the end of my name...maybe because christine and christina are TWO SEPARATE NAMES?!

it drives me nuts haha.

i've always said your name as kath-rin, although kath-er-in sounds normal to me as well. never heard kath-ern. i'm from the mid-atlantic though, so maybe it's a regional thing.

i'm christina and i get christine constantly. same as you, i have to fight the urge to yell that while christine is a wonderful name, IT IS NOT MY NAME, MY NAME ENDS IN A!

One of my close friends is named Christine, and she is called Christina soooo much. In a class we shared in middle school, the teacher called her that throughout the year. On one of the last days of school, I kind of laughingly pointed out that it was actually Christine, not Christina, and the teacher got seriously pissed at me for mentioning it. I meant it lightly enough, but seriously, how hard is this? It's not some crazy, unheard-of name. It's like not understanding how to pronounce Jennifer.

My name is Christiana. I get Christina, Christine, Christian. My nickname is Chrissy, but I've noticed a lot of people calling me Christy. I get that my full name can be somewhat confusing, but when people see Chrissy on paper, where does the T come from?

I think it might be a southern dialect/accent thing. I'm Katherine (go by Kate) but people where I'm from (Louisiana) sometimes say "Ka-trin." Ew.

My mom is Susan but due to my grandmother's southern (KY) accent, it always came out "Su-din."

Yeah. I love Julia for a girl but it's off limits because my in-laws all pronounce it as "JOOL-yuh" which drives me nuts.

I say Kath-rin

My name is Aubrey and I am frequently called Audrey, especially over the phone.
Although, not as much now as my name seems to be getting more popular.

I've always had a hard time distinguishing slight name pronunciation differences. For instance, I had a friend name Erin who would get frustrated with me because apparently I was constantly pronouncing her name Air-in not Er-in.

I pronounce Katherine, Kath-rin. Never heard Kath-ern, but I live in the northeast.

Just so you know you aren't crazy, I say kath-er-in. I'm from Minnesota and living in Kansas and that is what I always hear. I don't recall ever hearing Kath-ern.

I have a friend named Miranda and customers used to always call her Morocco (makes no sense, I know) or Melissa.

My name is Amanda but I go by Mandee and those two E's just throw everyone off and people sometimes call me Man-Day. People also often assume that my parents just straight up named me Mandee.

Also, my boyfriend is named Calvin but people call him Kevin sometimes. (I'm guilty of it but my brother is named Kevin so I think I'm excused.)

My name is Julianne, which .. I always thought it would be easy to say, you know? Juli + anne. But I get Julian ALLLLLL the time. Other versions are Jillian, Juliannie (wtf, physics teacher in high school? wtf?) or sometimes just Julie, but I'm never sure on that last one if they're trying to call me by a nickname or just see the first part :p Julian pisses me off the most. It's a boy's name, and there's CLEARLY an ANNE in my name, wtf teachers! (It's mostly teachers, lol).

I sounds to me like you're just particularly sensitive to the emphasis placed on the syllables. My sister's name is Elizabeth but I usually call her 'lisabeth, not because I like it as a nickname but because I just don't take care to pronounce each part of the name.

Date: 2010-08-12 02:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com
I'm a Stephanie constantly mistaken for Bethany.

"This is Stephanie."
"Bethany?"
"Stephanie."
"Bethany?"
"Stephanie."
"Okay, Beth, gotta question for you."

It's not worth it to pursue. I've made sure to let all my coworkers know, in case someone calls in later asking for "Beth."

The best is when you spell it, and they still don't get it. I really don't see how "S" and "B" sound the same.

Oh, and I remember in elementary school having papers passed back and Bethany and Brittany were confused.

My name is Georgia. NO ONE CAN SAY IT RIGHT WHAT THE HELL. People call me Georgina, Georgianna, Georgette, Georgeea, and all sorts of other random crap that I cannot imagine how they got from Georgia. I'm Canadian and all, but it's a US state AND a country, it's not that uncommon!

Date: 2010-08-12 07:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] qtshorty1625.livejournal.com
That reminds me of when I was younger and read the Nancy Drew series, and I always thought George's real name was Georgeea. When I got older, it finally dawned on me that it said Georgia. At that age, I think that part of me just assumed that the state and name would be pronounced different; though at the same time, it didn't even dawn on me that it was spelled like the state (or country). At the same time, I was also like 12.

I've always lived in NC, and I've heard "Kath-ern" before, but I agree, not the pronunciation I'd choose!

I'm Lauren, which I've always pronounced (as well as my family) Lar-in, and it makes me crazy when people insist on calling me Lor-in.

My name's Lesley and I've found I actually really hate the pronunciation "Lezz-ley". I think it stems from my brother calling me "Lesby" because he thought he was clever. Anyway, now I much much prefer "Less-ley"
