Also, since I wasn't raised with it as a tradition, I was curious about the origins of giving a child two middle names. I know there are multiple people who have/plan on doing it, so I was just curious what attracted you to the concept of two middle names versus one.

I have a cousin- Mary Ann Grace B. They just liked the way it flowed.

I could see giving my kid more than one middle name. We only plan on having 1 kid, maybe 2. So if we want to fit a family name in there, we might add two middle names.

Someone I went to college with actually has 4 for that reason :O

I had a friend who was Sarah Lauren Ashley Lastname. Her mom, 20 years later, said it was because she couldn't choose just two stereotypical 80's girl's names. :oD

Most people I know who have done it was just because they liked the flow or wanted to honor more than one person with the middle name(s).

I want to give my children 2 middle names because I love names so much and you get to use so few of them on your kids. Also I grew up with the most filler of filler middle names - also the same middle name of my mother and sisters so I always wanted to give my kids non-boring names.

There are so many names I want to use, but I'm only planning to have 2 or 3 children - if three of those names sound good together, then my kid will have two middle names, and that's that!

Personally, I think it's classier, maybe. Maybe it's classy in an eighties way, and being born in the eighties happened to get the idea stuck in my head at a very young age!

I also like the idea of giving daughters all one middle name the same, so that they still have a connection name-wise after they marry. But then adding a second middle name so it sounds like it was done on purpose and not just because the parents have no imagination.

Personally, I picked 2 middle names for yelling purposes, it feels more complete with 2 middle names and also, because I'm not into last names and feel like the name should stand alone (so, again, the completeness).

My kid is going to get two middle names -- one "regular" one, and then my last name. (I didn't change mine when I married.) It's important to my husband's family that the grandkids get his last name -- he's the last of the line, so to speak. I don't care all that much, but if they're taking his name, they're getting mine in there, too. :-P

One of my local radio stations had a call-in recently about how important it is to men that their wife take their last name (like, they wanted guys to call in and say if it was important to them). Your comment reminded me of that.

I like the idea of using your last name as a middle name for your kids. If I marry, I plan on keeping my last name as well, but then I want my surname to go my kids, even if not as their surname. Hyphenating would be unkind as both mine and my partner's last name is long. lol

I agree about the hyphenating. I think it's a nice thought, but it's just not for me. We played with giving girls my name and boys his or vice-versa, but eh. That just seemed overly complicated. And I couldn't con him into creating our own last name, so a second middle name it is!

I like the idea of two middle names because I like a lot of names, but I don't want to have fifteen kids. Plus, I like middle names that MEAN something, so I think it would be cool to have a family name, and then another name that means something else, or else a family name from both sides of the family, without giving a first name that they have to share with someone else. I will probably only use one middle name, though. But I would definitely be open to two.
