[identity profile] salomeshymn.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My two year old daughter's name is Valerie.  We want to let her name her baby sister.  She says her baby sister's name is "Deedee".  Like "baby", except she doesn't say "b"s very well so they sound like "d"s.  And obviously she hasn't spelled it out for us, so it could be spelled in all kinds of variations of that.
I also want my new baby to grow up to have a name she likes.
I'd like it to be a name that sounds nice with "Valerie" when I call to them both in the playground.
I've tried asking a few close friends and family for their feedback about this, about naming our baby "Deedee" or if they can think of anything similar that would leave us able to say that Valerie named her sister, but that would also be a real, beautiful name in it's own right.  Everyone I talk to seems afraid to give me any feedback at all, like nothing I suggested could be bad even if it really is a terrible choice.
So here I am asking complete strangers who have nothing to lose in insulting me.
Please share some honest, fearless feedback with me? Ideas?

What about Deirdre (pronounced Deer-dra) DeeDee could be a nickname.

My first thought was Deirdre as well.

I know a couple of girls named Drenda as well, if that floats your boat.

I think Deedee could be a nice nickname. There are plenty of names that Deedee could be a nickname for...

The most obvious is Deirdre (not sure on spelling, Deirdre vs. Deidre?). But I think you could use it for just about any female name that begins with a D.

Suggestions:
Dahlia
Daphne (I love it but it might be too much like Velma and Daphne from Scooby Doo)
Dolores
Delphine
Dorothea
Dorothy
Delilah

Some less obvious ones:
Nadine
Audrey

The only DeeDee I've ever know was using it as a nickname for Dorothy. No idea why @_@ I think any name begining with a D could work honestly.

If she is mispronouncing it and really means "BeeBee", I had a friend named Beatrice growing up and we all called her Bee Bee instead. It was a little strange sounding when we all hit high school age though...

My honest feedback would be that it's probably not the best idea to let your two-year-old daughter name the new baby. I think it's very nice (and I mean that in a completely non-sarcastic way, but I know it can be hard to tell over the internet) that you want to involve your daughter . . . however, she is so young that I doubt she'll really care what you name the new baby, or if she does, she'll get over it pretty fast.

THIS! If we let our two daughters name the new baby, it'd be either Emilie (my oldest's name) or Sleeping Beauty. I just don't think very young kids should name their siblings.

Though I do think the thing to do would be to go with a real name that DeeDee could be a nn for...if you're really stuck on the idea.

Agreed on all counts. One of my favorite stories from my baby book is that apparently when my mom asked what we should name the new baby if it was a boy, I, in my 3 year old wisdom, replied, "Elijah Big Bird!" I really wanted my sibling to named Big Bird.

If my two year old were to name the twins in my uterus right now I'm sure they'd be Zoe and Elmo.

Deirdre is the first name that came to mind.
Dorothy/Dorothea, Dana, Diana, Delilah... Lots of D names could work. =)

Deirdre is also the first name that came to mind for me. I actually had a friend in college named Dedra and she's such a great person that I'm really very fond of that spelling.

PS I agree with others that you shouldn't put too much stock in what your daughter is calling your new baby...at two, she is likely to change her mind in a few weeks anyway.

My first thought was it could be a nn and the first "full" name I thought of was Denise, probably because my Aunt has always been Aunt D(ee)...

Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea to let a two year old name your next baby. But with that being said, I do think DeeDee can be a cute nickname for D names, as others here have suggested. What I would do in this situation, if I really wanted my daughter to pick out the name, I would put together a list of names that I really liked and then let her choose from that list.

I think that Dee (and by extension Deedee) can be a nickname for really any name starting with a D.

I like:

Dora
Danika
Danielle
Dinah

I think it's cute that you want your daughter to be apart of the naming her sister!

My sons are 22 months apart- I asked my oldest all the time when I was pregnant what his brothers name was, hoping he'd come up with something good since I was clueless on what to name him!

Also, when I was three, and we were working on adopting what would be my little brother, the social worker had to do an interview with me. She asked me what I wanted to name my brother or sister, and I proclaimed, "Raisin Bran!" Needless to say, my parents didn't go with that. ;-)

If I had been allowed to name my sister (she was born a month after I turned three), she would have been either Ruthie or Floyd. I was obsessed with the Sesame Street movie "Follow That Bird". She is now nearly 19 and I am nearly 22. We are both eternally grateful that she is Emily Ann and not Ruthie (or Floyd!). Also, my invisible friend was named Kiki Amanda, a name which makes me cringe now. I doubt Valerie will mind too much if you don't use her "suggestion" (which, unlike my precocious little two-year-old self it doesn't seem like she's actually saying "I WANT YOU TO NAME MY SISTER DEEDEE!").

Deedee makes me think of the annoying sister from the Cartoon Network cartoon Dexter. However, I think it would be sweet to use it as a nickname. A lot of the above comments have great suggestions!

I have a friend who's nickname as a child was D.D. because his (I know, opposite sex, but I think the suggestion would still work) first and middle names both began with D's.
