Jun. 29th, 2010 11:46 amWhat names do you love that you can't or won't consider because it just doesn't work with your last name?
For me it's:
Alice
Lucy
Sylvia
Silas
Simon
Jonas
My last name is 2 syllables that starts and ends in S.
I'm sure I can't be the only one with a list of loved, but unuseable names!

Date: 2010-06-29 04:51 pm (UTC)I also love Alice but it's lost out twice now for a girls name because of the "ce" ending in our last name and also because I just can't get over the fact that it has the word "lice" in it. :oP

Date: 2010-06-29 05:01 pm (UTC)I love it but we have a very irish last name. my husband and I (and thus, our kids) are each only 1/4 irish so it's way overkill to put Seamus with our last name. it's the reason we WERE able to pull off Dietrich. very German, for a kid that's only like 1/4, give or take, but paired with our irish last name it kinda gets neutralized a bit.

Date: 2010-06-29 05:49 pm (UTC)My married name is Sauter. This has ruined my ability to use Seth, which I adore. It's a lisping person's nightmare to say. I also had originally planned my whole life to have a son named Peter, after my grandfather, but I feel Peter Sauter just sound ridiculous. Other people have argued that point with me, but if it bugs me, that's all that matters. Other -er names have been ruled out, as well.
And I sadly felt I needed to take Alice off our girl list because I don't like how the "s" sound at the end of it runs into the "s" sound at the beginning of the last name. One friend pointed out that it sounded like Allosaur, as in the dinosaur and I had to unfortunately agree. Interestingly enough, Beatrice has a similar ending and is my top choice, but that doesn't bother me because it ends more sharply than Alice does, which I feel has a longer "s" sound at the end.

Date: 2010-06-29 06:30 pm (UTC)I can speak from my own experience, though... before I was born, my mum wanted to name me Celeste. I'm glad she didn't, because I also have a really French last name. And I can't speak French. But if my name were Celeste Frenchlastname, I feel like people would assume that I must be fluent in French!

Date: 2010-06-29 07:23 pm (UTC)Names that begin with B.
The only one I really like anyway is Benjamin, so it's not too much of a loss. Also, he could have his father's last name...

Date: 2010-06-29 10:19 pm (UTC)I'm going to use Neva no matter what but sometimes I feel that it's too many v's. And anything that begins in M is out but I'm not too fond of M names, so that's good. But I LOVE V names and that sucks.
I was thinking about Neva Genevieve and then I thought about Neva Genevieve Morovic and that's just too many v's!

Date: 2010-06-30 08:15 am (UTC)Stacey, Sophia, Stella, Simon, Sylvia, Alexis, Vincent, Lucy, Thomas.
I also have to be careful when it comes to initials, because I'd love to use the middle name Sylvia, after my grandmother whom I am close to. If I do that (ignoring the fact that it's a little 'S' overdrive) her name couldn't begin with an 'A' ie Alexa Sylvia S____

However, it does open up the possibility of loads of cool Welsh names. :D
