just found out my friend is naming her baby girl Mya McKenzie what do you think? i think its cute.

There's an R&B singer named Mya who pronounces her name just like Maya, so I'd imagine that's where a lot of people get that pronunciation form.

Well, to be fair, lots of names come into use after they're exposed to the public eye.

If it makes any difference, behindthename.com (which is among the most reputable baby name sites) does give the pronunciation of Mya to be the same as that of Maya (MIE-ə), although it gives its definition to be a modern English variant of Mia.

What does all of this means? To me, it means that Mya is a modern form of Maya or Mia, and it would be better for someone to stick with a reputable spelling. However, it also means (to me) that neither pronunciation is wrong.
