I have been leaning towards Oliver for a boy for a long time, but now everyone says the child would be teased horribly. What do you think? What about the name Noah for a boy?
Yeah, I guess it's a really common name, so that's why I would prefer Oliver. My husband is convinced he will be teased with Oliver Twist, so he prefers Noah
On babycenter Oliver is considered uncommon being in the 7,000 rankings whereas Noah is ranked number 10. Which is why I really prefer Oliver. My husband just worries he will be teased about Oliver Twist.
i don't think he'd necessarily be teased, but i cannot picture the name oliver on an adult. i think it's a really cute name for a little boy but i think he'd have to have a certain personality to pull it off in adulthood so that it would be fitting and if he doesn't, it would just seem like his name is wrong.
i do love the name though. it's my dog's name.
and i love noah. i think it's gone down in popularity recently too so that's always good. solid, strong name. he will get ark jokes all his life though.
I love both Oliver and Noah. It really doesn't matter what you name your child because kids will find something about it to tease them horribly. That's what kids do.
That's what I kept telling people. My name is Theresa and they figured out that it bothers me when they pronounce the 'h' (it's supposed to be silent), so I mean, honestly. The people who disagreed with Oliver said that I wasn't even giving him a chance. I disagree.
Both Oliver and Noah are at the top of my list, so... =) Noah is fairly popular though (at least in the USA) and Oliver seems to be on the rise (though it's already pretty common in the UK).
I don't think Oliver will be teased very much, if at all. At least not for his name. (Like jeweledvixen said, kids will find something to tease about if that's their intent.)
The sweet hubby has nixed 90% of the names I threw out there, but he hasn't suggested a single name... I may just use the labor card and trump him, because it is getting annoying :P
I like both names. I'd pick Oliver over Noah, though. I definitely don't think he'd be teased. For one, I think now days kids have a larger variety of names. My son's first grade class has some pretty interesting names in it. Not cr8tiv, but just really varied as far as style, eras, and ethnics. Anyone can make fun of a name if they want because kids are mean, but I really don't think he'd get teased, I'm sure there will be plenty of the cr8tiv kids to tease before Oliver.
That's what I think. I feel like more people are going for more creative and original names today that Oliver is pretty normal. I'm sure some other kid named Waterfall or something equally weird will get teased first :P
That is a GREAT suggestion!! We want two boys at least, so I can bring that up to the hubby. He used to love the name Oliver until everyone told him it was a mean thing to name a kid.
I don't think a kid named Oliver would be teased, at all. It's a nice name. I like Noah too...I can't really decide which I like more, though. They're both good names, Noah is just more popular at the moment.
I think the worst teasing kids could come up with about Oliver would be stuff about Oliver Twist or olives. It's hard to find a name that absolutely won't lead to any teasing ever... maybe impossible. My name is Alison, and sometimes other kids called me Alison Wonderland. Trust me, I wasn't scarred for life. :P
Also, Oliver is a fairly popular name at the moment, so it's not like kids will have never heard of someone named Oliver.
I agree. My name is Theresa, and surprisingly my classmates never made the connection to Mother Teresa... but they still teased me by pronouncing it as if the 'h' weren't silent, but somehow I survived :P
I felt the same way, I didn't think it would be an easy target, but a lot of people do apparently. It was frustrating getting ganged up about it like I was so mean to my baby to even think of the name :P ohwell
I love Oliver! When we were told (mistakenly) that this baby was a boy, for a month her name was Oliver and we got nothing but compliments. Our first son will probably still be Oliver.
Yeah, since before we even conceived the first time we loved the name Oliver, but now that so many people have complained...Well, I can see why a lot of people prefer to wait to reveal the name.
