I didn't realize Mia was so popular! I really like it.

Ugh, Jayden. Finally cracking the top 10.

[identity profile] summer-mommy.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised it didn't crack the top 10 like 5 years ago! My daughter had 2 Jayden's in a 4K class of 8. lol.

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It did, but the SSA doesn't combine spellings. Since it's one of those names that is spelled 18 different ways, it's hard to really gauge its placement on the name scale. Same with all of the Aidan variants.

[identity profile] summer-mommy.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Aha! Makes perfect sense :)

[identity profile] summer-mommy.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Olivia kind of surprises me. I haven't heard that name used since I was in HS, seriously. So maybe it's just not popular where I am? Or maybe I'm just not paying attention. lol. Otherwise, pretty much about what I would've thought.

[identity profile] giveitfullheart.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize William and Daniel were so popular.

[identity profile] willsjoy.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
William has been in the top 13 for the past 30 years according to the SSA (it's my husbands' name, so I was checking) :)

[identity profile] giveitfullheart.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nuts! I really don't think I hear it all that much (even considering the common nicknames). Maybe it's just not as noticeable as the Aidens and stuff because it's classic. I never really notice a ton of Elizabeths but it's been pretty high up for ages I think. Must be the classic thing!

[identity profile] alexandria-skye.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
jayden? really? :/ i didn't realize that some of the girls names were so popular; i'm a little surprised to see ava, chloe, and mia, though i guess i'm less surprised with ava.

[identity profile] spaceandclouds.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know Ethan was that popular! As for the rest, no surprises whatsoever. I love Mia, still. It's one of those names that no matter how popular it gets, it never bores me.

[identity profile] lovetokate.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't stand Isabella/Bella these days.

Kind of sickened that Jayden is even in the top 10 for boys.

I'm surprised Brayden (and all it's other versions) and Addison aren't on there. Seems like every person I know having a baby lately names them one of those two. Must just be my little corner of the country.

[identity profile] how-obscure.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm right with you on the first two comments.

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with Brayden (and all Aidan variants) is that they are spelled 50 different ways for each name. I'm willing to bet if you combined spellings, the variants would all make the top 10. And Addison is often changed to Addyson lately, so there's that too.

[identity profile] aftondays.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I see Sophia has moved up a couple of notches. Not surprising but interesting to me since it's the name of my two-year-old.

Mia surprises me. I don't know any, no one I'm even distantly associated with has one...huh.

Nothing really surprised me, but I read the Top 100 and wanted to cry that there were so many misspelled crap names on there. Misspelled ones rank higher than correctly spelled ones in some cases. WHY?!

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Jayden cracked the top ten! Nooooo! :P

I am surprised that Isabella is #1 for girls. Not shocked, but a little surprised.

I knew Alexander and William were going to rise. I'm a bit surprised that Noah went up that much, I thought it might be on its way out (not out out, just less popular than it was).

I'm not surprised that Madison dropped a few places.

Actually, I just a news story that pointed how the # 1 boy and girl names are from Twilight.

[identity profile] lovetokate.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't catch that at first either.

Ugh. EW, PEOPLE! EW!

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be kind of insane to suggest that nobody should name their kids Jacob or Isabella, just because Stephenie Meyer happened to pick popular names for her main characters... and kind of insane to suggest that most of the people choosing those names, which were already very popular before Twilight, are choosing them because of Twilight.

[identity profile] lovetokate.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to shun little Jacob's and Isabella's I come across or anything. But personally I can't stand the books/movies/franchise and it'd be enough to deter me personally from those names.

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it's the other way around, actually--Stephenie Meyer said she named her main character what she would have named her daughter, and at that time Isabella was already very popular and rapidly rising in popularity. Same deal with Jacob. I really think it's more of a case of the author using popular names, rather than the names becoming popular because the author used them.

[identity profile] hwar.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Michael down another notch! And Ethan as #2! I wouldn't have guessed it. I do like the name though so thumbs up for that. A big thumbs down for Jayden in the top 10 though! Ack! I guess if Madison is still on the top 10 for girls then it makes sense though. Otherwise the girl names don't surprise me. I know SO MANY Ella-Bella-Isabellas. That suffix is super popular. Annabel(la) and Arabella are on their way up I am sure.

[identity profile] beepandetch.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow I'm surprise Isabella is number one. I know way more girls named Isabel.

I hate Mia, it reminds of of Missing In Action and Bulimia.

[identity profile] after-the-ashes.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ewww about Jayden. Although, it's funny that all the others are soooo classic and probably haven't changed much. While the girls list is more creative. I was really surprised to see Mia on the list.

not particularly surprised though a couple of the names make me go "fannish love perhaps"... I am a little surprised to see MY birth name in the top 5[born Emma, prefer Emmy].

Also poking around there site I'm a bit shocked that my whole personal sibset is in the top 300 [my little sister Abby's at 272 and my two brothers, Ian and Adam are within the top 100.]

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year, Emma was #1!

[identity profile] lind-saay.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad Emily is finally dropping. It's one of my favorites and maybe at this rate, it'll be out of the top 10 before I use it.

[identity profile] museofmyself.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, just so glad to not see my ***14-year-old*** daughter's name Lily in the top ten. My fingers are crossed that her name starts falling out of fashion SOON. Not that it isn't a fabulous name, of course. ;)

I'm quite surprised to see Mia in the top 10! Also, Jayden?! Wow. And Anthony, even! Hmmm.

[identity profile] quitmyscene.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
All my favorites are moving up :[ ...though I should expect it.

Scarlett: 210 -> 169
Nolan: 131 -> 122
Desmond: 410 -> 384
Declan: 346 -> 308
Ada: 596 -> 573
Clara: 205 -> 199
Miles: 167 -> 162
Elliott: 385 -> 350
Harper: 296 -> 174 (wow)
Eloise: (not listed) -> 917 (we'll go with another wow)

I guess my only exception to moving up is Ciara... but I prefer Clara. I don't see Nolan staying out of the top 100 for much longer :(

Has there always been a twins section? Its kind of depressing...

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/twins.html

[identity profile] ounceofpeace.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
omg, the twin list is just AWFUL! ella and emma? heaven and nevaeh? makayla and makenzie? london and paris? haylee and kaylee? i could go on and on...and that's just for the girls

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and then take a look at the boy/girl twins. Tyler and Taylor? Jayda and Jayden? Brian and Brianna? People, they're not two halves of the same person!

[identity profile] alexandria-skye.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god, london and paris. D:

[identity profile] loveinacarcrash.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Mia? that's interesting. I had never heard the name until a couple months ago when my friend named her daughter Mia. Her first choice was Ava, which I'm also suprised by how popular it suddenly got (at least in my area)! I think every girl friend I have has said they want to name their daughter Ava.

[identity profile] kellyjoy.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, Layla is 45. That's a name I thought was popular here in b_n, but not necessarily in the US at large.

I'm sad about Avery being 35 for girls - it's one of the few names I like for a boy.

[identity profile] kellyjoy.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, whoops, Avery is 32. Even worse!

[identity profile] cremepuff.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, not a single one of these is a surprise to me.

[identity profile] ouronlylight.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
NOOOOOOOOOO I'm so upset that Isabella is #1. I really love that name, and I hate that it's so popular. :(

Over all, the names that I like are: Jacob, Ethan, Alexander, William, Noah, Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Emily, and Abigail.

[identity profile] lorienellen.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that Ethan was so popular! It was on my list but not anymore, bummer.

[identity profile] makeitstopjamie.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, Alexander is #4. I guess we might have to change our boy's name when the time comes.

I really don't like Jayden. I worked with a first grade BOY named Jaylen. Just ugh.

[identity profile] whispertown.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
haha...my nearly 3-year-old nephew is named Noah Anthony...

[identity profile] frost.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, no surprises.

[identity profile] frost.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, maybe a little surprised at Jayden.
Least it's not Hayden though; to me, that's the worst of the 'ayden' lot. X(

[identity profile] schexyschteve.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe Jayden cracked the top 10. And I didn't expect Mia to be up there either.

The rest are the same old stuff.

[identity profile] babyjess8.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I love not being an American, because some of my favourite names rank highly here but not so much in my own country :)

The top 10 don't suprise me at all, apart from Anthony. I thought Addison and Asher would be higher. Seeing Ethan at #2 is a little shocking though.

My current top 5 are:
Asher (165)
Darcy (Not Listed)
Noah (9)
Bodhi (Not Listerd)
Alexander (4)
Isabel (110)
Maeve (591)
Josephine (201)
Lucia (305)
Eva (99)

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2010-05-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I love all of the boy names except for Jayden. William and Alexander are on my short list.

Not big on Madison, Abigail, Chloe or Mia. I know a little girl named Maria, whose family calls her Mia. I think it's cute in that sense, but not as a full name. Chloe to me sounds more like a pet (I wanted to name my one cat that, lol). I've never really understood the appeal of Abigail, but don't hate it. And Madison is kind of blah. I looove Emma, Olivia, Ava and Emily. They're actually probably four of my top five girl names right now (the other one being Caroline).
