May. 5th, 2010 12:00 pmnew name obsession of mine:
Genevieve
Janie Louise would be a given first-daughter's name, because Jane was my boyfriend's mom's name and Louise is a traditional middle name for girls in my family, so thanks to family schtuff that name's pretty locked in... but how would the sibset Genevieve (nn Gene) and Janie sound? Does Gene and Janie sound weird together? Is Genevieve too "fancy" to be paired with Janie?
Also, what middle name would you pair with Genevieve?
tyia!!

Date: 2010-05-05 04:12 pm (UTC)I think a good middle name is something with a similar French sound. And it doesn't matter if the sibling sets go together perfectly, they're individual children, they should have individual names, ya know? Although Janie and Genevieve might be a bit of a tongue twister to say together while you're yelling at them (lol) if Janie and Gene is too much, remember that Geneiveve has enough sounds to have a ton of nicknames. Genny, Eve, Evie, Viv, Vivvy. Heck, sometimes I call my baby EssieMay, when you have your baby, you'll find a ton of cutsie nicknames made out of her name, lol:)

i like Esme and EssieMay is too cute! :D i'm notorious for cutsey nicknames... i fell head over heels for the name Marshall when I was watching United States of Tara on Showtime and she called her son "Marshmellow" (as a cutsey nickname for Marshall).. boyfriend and dad quickly vetoed Marshall strictly because of the nickname Marshmellow! LOL!!

Date: 2010-05-05 04:41 pm (UTC)My grandmother was Genevieve nn Gene but she had such trouble with people assuming she was a boy from the nickname spelling that she gave my aunt the name Jean.
Renee is my mom's middle name.
Janie and Gene are a bit too similar for my tastes but if it works for you then go for it.

Date: 2010-05-05 06:24 pm (UTC)i thought about this, but i kinda like boyish nicknames on a girl for some reason... Billie, Tommi, Andi, that sort of thing.. however, my name's Sarah and i've never been mistaken for a boy because of my name... maybe if i had been all my life then i'd feel differently!!

Date: 2010-05-05 04:51 pm (UTC)Anyway, Janie is much too cutesy. I think you should just use Jane and call her Janie. Jane is so much more elegant, and that would go much better with Genevieve. Are you pronouncing the nn Gene like the male name Gene? Gene and Janie are really matchy, but since they'd be nns it's not quite as big of a deal. I'd try to pick a different nn for Genevieve that doesn't match as much, though.
My favorite Genevieve combo is Genevieve Margaux.

Date: 2010-05-05 06:27 pm (UTC)I thought about Jane over Janie, but we want it kinda different than his mom's name and plus we always thought that Janie sounds better than Jane with the middle name Louise :)
I like nick-namey sounding names, although I know it causes problems... my librarian in grade school told us about her nephew named Bob. Not Robert or anything - just Bob. So he was applying for a job... something kinda professional... and evidently they were like "well, we like you and all, but you'll have to go by your full first name." he told them that Bob was his first name. They hired him under the stipulation that he legally change his name to Robert or something, because they refused to let someone named "Bob" work there. Isn't that awful??

Date: 2010-05-05 06:40 pm (UTC)That is pretty ridiculous that they had to make Bob change his name legally to hire him. But I do agree with the principle. A nickname as a full name is unprofessional.

Date: 2010-05-05 06:50 pm (UTC)i think a nickname as a full name is unprofessional too, myself... i think it's nice to have the nickname to go back casually, but have the "real" name to be able to use as well. i think a name influences people, and too many doors are subconciously closed when a child has a nickname for a full name.
I also think, however, that the fact that they made Bob change his name to get the job is name discrimination. i mean, it's nice that they were honest with him and gave him the option, but not really fair.
i'm like you - i think it's pretty rediculous :)

...yet i'm considering naming a little girl "Janie"
I guess i've been considering it for so long, it doesn't feel like a nickname anymore :)

Date: 2010-05-05 05:04 pm (UTC)I like Genevieve as a first name for the sib-set you described, and if you want to use it as a middle name, I think it sounds good with a shorter first name.
I agree that Jane is much better than Janie. Janie is a perfectly acceptable nn for Jane.

Date: 2010-05-05 06:32 pm (UTC)i think you're right that Genevieve sounds good paired with a shorter name... be it (short first name) Genevieve (as you mentioned), or Genevieve (short middle name)... maybe Genevieve Maryse?

Date: 2010-05-06 03:51 am (UTC)A little, yes; too similar for me.
"Is Genevieve too "fancy" to be paired with Janie?"
Also yes. I think Genevieve sounds fancy/sophisticated, while Janie/Jane sounds really plain.
Janie/Jane makes me of a little [brunette] farm girl with braided pigtails for some reason, lol. O_o *shrugs*

Date: 2010-05-10 08:50 pm (UTC)I'd say simple, single-syllable names would be good mns to consider.
