I think that's what surprised me about it. I know it as a boy's name too, and typically I don't like giving names to the "wrong" gender. But Asa is so seldom used that it works very well for a girl.

It can be a girl's name, but it's pronounced differently (I've spent some time in Norway where it's used). It doesn't even begin with an A, but an A with a circle over it, which is pronounced "Aw", like the sound in "paw". So you'd pronounce the name AW-suh. The right way to transliterate the A-with-a-circle-on-top is with a double A - Aasa. I doubt the parents were thinking of the Norse name! But who knows. Bridget has vaguely Scandinavian connections, so they might have been going for that.

Oh, I just checked back on behinthename.com and you can see the correct letter there.

(I feel like such a nerd. sorry for the lecture, but I find all this so geekily fun.)
