I'm totally psyche-ing myself up for a good verbal beating for this one, but I am really really into the name Magellan right now. I know an amazing woman who named her son Eli Magellan, and it is just perfect for him and such a gorgeous name (I think).

So--

What do you think? I think I do like it best as a middle name.

Also, I'd never even considered this as a name until she used it. What are some names that you've seen used that you hadn't even thought about? (I'm especially looking for fresh, cool, but established-sounding names--i.e. not any reports on the craziest spellings or random tying-together-of-syllables that you've ever seen.)

I'm not a big fan of Eli--but Magellan has a nice ring to it. :)

Someone once told me they had a son named Winter Drake.

Know what? I usually roll my eyes at things like that, but this one's not bad. I wouldn't inflict it as a first name, but I kind of like it as a middle name. "Eli Magellan" sounds very distinguished, a little over the top, but not bad.

But ONLY if the parents actually had a reason for choosing Magellan - like an interest in exploration, or some kind of family connection. I'd definitely be rolling my eyes if the parents had no idea who Ferdinand Magellan was but heard it somewhere and thought it sounded cool.

I guess Magellan doesn't have really bad associations like, say, Cortes would, although he did bring some South American Native people back with him as slaves - but that was the 16th century...

As a middle name, it's awesome and it's exactly what I look for in one - a strong history that means something. But it's totally not my style and I'd never use it. And I'd DEFINITELY never use it for a first name.

It reminds me of those horrible commercials a few years ago.

"Are you gellin?"

"Gellin like a fellon!"

An aquaintence has a son name Collumbus. He goes by Colm, I think it's an irish name, pronounced 'collum'.

Well, it is the name of a very popular brand of GPS unit. However, if you don't hike much and don't hang out with ONLY people who do, then Magellan would be fine. :) My sister has a cat named Magellan--Jelly for short.

Yeah it makes me think of the navigation system in my car.

MN only, for sure. I just think it sounds weird. It is not a name I would ever want.

I thought it was interesting that they were considering Magdalen as a middle name for a girl and ended up with Magellan as a middle name for a boy - so similar in sound and shape!

I'm not a fan of Magellan, but Eli (short for Elijah) is in my top 2 boy names.

Magellan reminds me of the kids tv show Magellan's Castle.
